Engraving and Awakening – Quick start guide

Overview

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the new engraving and awakening system in this game has certainly piqued my interest! It’s always exciting to see new ways to enhance our characters, especially after they reach the max level.

At level 100, your character can undergo engraving and awakening to enhance their abilities. You can view their maximum stats, both before and after these processes, within the “Growth Preview” section of your characters tab.

Engraving and awakening supplies are both subject to a time limit, but the supplies needed for awakening are significantly harder to come by compared to those required for engraving.

What is Engraving?

At level 100, your character gains the ability to engrave. This engraving enhances your character’s statistics.

Three distinct types of engravings exist: HP (for characters of a physical nature), ATK/M.ATK (attack for magical characters), and DEF/M.RES (defense or magical resistance, depending on the character’s type).

In order to engrave, you will need:

  • Gold
  • Engraving Scrolls
  • Essence of Life (for HP), Essence of Strength (for ATK/M.ATK) or Essence of Perserverance (for DEF/M.RES)

Engraving supplies like Scrolls and Essence are primarily available at the Evil Castle Shop and Event Shop. These items have a time restriction as the currency you can acquire from seasonal Evil Castle rewards and event rewards is limited. You might also find them in the Golden Thread shop and Powder shop, but it’s usually advised against using Golden Thread or Powder for engraving materials because Tears, costumes, and tickets are typically more valuable.

The costs for engraving increase significantly as the levels go up:

Resource Lv 1 Engraving Lv 10 Engraving
Gold 20,000 200,000
Scrolls 10 100
Essence 2 20

To deeply etch a single character, you require approximately 1650 Scrolls and 330 Essence (110 of each type). Players capable of completing most event tasks and all floors of the Tower of Pride should find it effortless to engrave at least one character in every two-week season. This estimation is based on the assumption that:

  • If you were purchasing all engraving materials from the Evil Castle Shop with Devil Coins, you would need a total of 14,850 Devil Coins.
  • Tower of Pride gives you 1,000 Devil Coins per floor clear (total 6 floors) plus seasonal rewards of at least 3,000 Devil Coins for just participating. Just clearing 6 floors should therefore earn you at least 9,000 Devil Coins per 2 week season.
  • If you can spare around 6,000 event currency to buy around 600 Scrolls and 50 of each Essence from the Event Shop (which is not too difficult to achieve if you do all the event activities every day), you can use your Devil Coins to buy the remaining required materials. This way, you should be able to afford to enough materials to fully engrave a unit once every 2 weeks.

What is Awakening?

Once you have fully upgraded all 3 engravings, the Awakening option becomes available.

Awakening is basically the final stage of engraving, and will provide a further final upgrade to the character’s stats. Awakening is very expensive: it costs 500,000 gold and 200 Awakening Elixir. There are presently only 2 ways to obtain Awakening Elixir.

Obtaining the Awakening Elixir primarily comes from earning rewards during Last Night, with a daily maximum of up to 5 Elixirs.

The only other way to obtain Elixir is by using Powder of Hope, but it is generally not recommended to use Powder for Elixir unless you are a very big spender. Powder is scarce (it is only earned from gacha pulls), and it’s usually better to use it to buy costumes. It costs 2 Powder per 1 Elixir, so it would cost 400 Powder (i.e. the cost of 2 costumes) just to awaken 1 character.

Suppose you don’t buy Elixirs containing Powder, and you reach the maximum reward rate during the Last Night event, it would take approximately 40 days to accumulate enough Elixir to awaken a single character. This means that Awakening is the feature with the longest time requirement for upgrades within the game.

It’s fortunate that the enhancements from Awakening only provide modest boosts and aren’t overpowering. There are five distinct types of Awakening (the type you get isn’t selectable, as it depends on your character). The details about the stat increases for each type can be found below:

Awakening type Stat Boosts
Strength 12% ATK, 10% property dmg (elemental dmg)
Magic 12% M.ATK, 10% property dmg (elemental dmg)
Protection 4% DEF, 14% HP
Anti Magic 4% M.RES, 14% HP
Mind’s Eye 24% Crit DMG, 4% Crit Rate
