So, electricity. Everybody needs it. It’s not like you can opt out of electricity, you know? And this whole “clean energy” thing? It’s become a whole thing. Like, suddenly everyone’s an expert. It’s just…power. But fine, let’s talk about companies trying to make a buck off it. I’ve been looking at a few. Don’t ask me why, I just…do.
Bloom Energy (BE +3.28%), Brookfield Renewable (BEP +2.32%)(BEPC +2.37%), and NuScale Power (SMR 2.86%). Three names. They all claim to be the future. The future. Like the present isn’t good enough? I’m telling you, it’s exhausting. Anyway, here’s the deal with each of them, as I see it. And believe me, I see things.
Bloom Energy: It’s a Box. A Complicated Box.
Bloom Energy makes these fuel cell things. Solid oxide, whatever that means. It’s basically a box that makes electricity without, you know, burning things. Which is good, I guess. They can just…add more boxes if you need more power. It’s modular. Like LEGOs for power plants. The thing is, why can’t they just connect to the grid like everyone else? It takes too long to get permission, apparently. So Bloom Energy just…delivers a box. It’s a whole system. And they have a $20 billion backlog. Twenty billion. What are they, building a spaceship? And the revenue is up? Of course it is. Everything is up these days. It’s ridiculous. They made two billion. Two billion! And the earnings went up. From 28 cents to 82. Eighty-two cents. It’s not a fortune, is it? And the stock is up 500%? Five hundred percent? It’s insane. It’s for people who like risk. Which is most people, apparently. I don’t get it. But the backlog is huge, so they’ll probably keep growing. It’s just…a lot.
Brookfield Renewable: Income? Really?
Brookfield Renewable. They pay dividends. Dividends! Like we’re back in the 1950s. They have two share classes, a partnership and a corporate one. The partnership pays 5%, the corporate 4%. Why? Because of…taxes, or something. It’s all so complicated. Institutional investors can’t own partnerships, so they buy the corporate shares, driving up the price. And small investors get stuck with the lower yield. It’s a whole system designed to…I don’t even know what it’s designed to do. They own solar, wind, hydro, storage…everything. And they own half of Westinghouse, which builds nuclear plants. Nuclear! It’s like they can’t decide what they want to be. They’re spending up to $10 billion on projects. Ten billion! What are they, building a whole new power grid? And they expect distribution growth of 5-9%. 5-9%! It’s just…numbers. A lot of numbers. It’s all very…efficient. Which is terrifying.
NuScale Power: A Gamble. A Huge Gamble.
NuScale Power. Small modular nuclear reactors. SMRs. Sounds…promising. They’re supposed to be factory-built and safer. But they haven’t built one yet. Not a single one. They have some “sales lined up,” but they’re not finalized. The stock has been on a roller coaster. Up 190%, then down 30%. Thirty percent! It’s like they’re deliberately trying to lose money. Only aggressive investors should consider this. Which means, people who enjoy stress. If their technology works, they could be big. But what if it doesn’t? What then? It’s a huge risk. And honestly, I don’t like risk. I like things that…work. Consistently. Is that too much to ask?
So, Electricity. Fine.
Look, electricity is important. We all need it. And these companies are trying to make money off it. Bloom, Brookfield, NuScale. They all appeal to different types of investors. Dividend lovers, startup fans, risk-takers. Whatever. Do your research. Or don’t. It’s your money. I’m just saying, it’s all very…exhausting. And frankly, I need a nap.
