Occasionally, you may find yourself in the mood for a strategic game, but prefer a more straightforward approach, where the focus is on conquering and dominating rather than intricate decision-making. In such cases, the Necrophage from Endless Legend 2 could be just what you’re looking for – a playstyle that allows you to simply devour and assert your power.
These factions resemble common swarms, such as the Zerg from StarCraft or the Tyranids in Warhammer 40,000. Unlike being inherently evil, they are primarily driven by hunger and view the world as an endless feast. Amplitude doesn’t require you to establish colonies for them. The Necrophage only necessitate a single capital city to serve as the hub of their empire, although they can expand their territorial claims by building a Burrow that can later be upgraded into a Nest. However, these structures are not fully-fledged cities; rather, they function as gateways for your endless horde of followers.
As a dedicated Endless Legend 2 gamer, I’ve found myself often caught up in the game’s intricate narrative, chasing NPC armies or specific locations across the world map. However, when my main army is out of position, this can be quite a hassle. But fear not, the Necrophage are unfazed by such constraints! Their Burrows and Nests create an extensive underground tunnel network that spans the globe, allowing Necrophage armies to traverse vast distances in just a single turn. By prioritizing the development of this network during exploration, you’ll find yourself swiftly responding to any threats or quests that come your way. It’s not just about reacting quickly; it’s also about putting the pressure on enemies, knowing that your reinforcements are never far from the battlefield.
Rapidity and unyielding tenacity are already commendable traits of swarm factions that we can endorse. However, there’s still room for more as their method of unit acquisition is quite thematic. When you successfully defeat enemy armies in combat, you automatically generate Larvae nearby. These are the fundamental Necrophage units and can be developed into stronger ones by feeding them corpses. The more battles you engage in, the larger your army becomes. If you need to sacrifice some Larvae during a battle to maintain the offensive, don’t worry, they will regenerate instantly.
This mechanic truly embodies another essential characteristic of a well-designed swarm faction: It gives the impression of an irresistible force, continually expanding at the cost of the opposition, not just in numbers but also in terms of improvement and strength.
When you capture a city with the Necrophage, it isn’t possible to transform it into your colony. Instead, you have two choices: either temporarily feed on some of its inhabitants (implying a return for more later), or devour everyone and everything, including the city’s valuable resources. Moreover, your armies can gather resources from the land they move through, giving the impression of an impending global catastrophe. All that is left behind after you are gone is desolate ground.
As a ravenous Necrophage gamer, who am I to delve into the intricacies of Endless Legend 2’s revamped diplomacy system when there are snacks aplenty? After all, I wouldn’t engage in chit-chat with my dinner, and neither does the Necrophage. It’s great that combat feels more engaging compared to my previous gaming session, considering the swarm life favors fighting. However, I can’t help but express a minor annoyance regarding the combat UI. With unit cards and abilities tucked away in the top left corner, it’s all too easy for me to miss crucial details during the heat of battle.
It’s been noted that the Necrophage doesn’t seem to fit well with certain gameplay features, such as the hero system where players can assign friends or companions to characters. Is it plausible for them to have feelings and relationships? To make the game more immersive, a simple solution could be to rename these relationships for flavor reasons.
As a gaming enthusiast, let me tell you, Amplitude nailed it with this faction – the Necrophage are masterfully designed for a satisfying swarm experience. Feeling peckish? The upcoming Endless Legend 2 demo on Steam, launching August 11, 2025, gives you the chance to sink your teeth into them personally!
