Empire’s Media Manipulation: The Ghorman Massacre Unveiled in Andor’s Shocking Reveal

What’s the secret to making people accept and even celebrate a terrible crime? The Empire in Andor‘s second season demonstrated one method by manipulating the media. By controlling the narrative and avoiding scrutiny, they managed to turn their own war crimes into political victories. This is why the show’s third arc felt so realistic – because it exposed the power of an unquestioning media in shaping public perception and suppressing the truth.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I must say that the devastation of Ghorman and its inhabitants in Star Wars: Andor is undeniably one of the most harrowing sequences ever captured on film. It wasn’t merely exceptional writing, acting, or production that made this scene so impactful. The brutal and sinister nature of the Empire’s genocide resonated deeply because of how meticulously they executed it.

The intricate plan, which spanned years, was only feasible due to the role media played in facilitating it. This is a chilling reminder of the power that storytelling can have in shaping reality, even if it’s just on the silver screen.

Krennic and his elite squad of monstrous allies understood that the Empire couldn’t annihilate a planet as influential, potent, and politically significant as Ghorman without stirring suspicion or retaliation. Since the very first day Imperial officers started plotting the planet’s elimination, they recognized the power of propaganda. They wouldn’t be able to persuade the public to embrace an unthinkable atrocity. Instead, they needed to convince the public that the opposite was reality – that fiction was fact, that tyranny was freedom. And no one excels more than a gullible journalist in turning even the most blatant and obvious falsehoods into widely accepted truths.

In BBY 2, the hidden consequences of the Empire’s secretive operations unfolded on screens throughout the galaxy at a great distance. Trustworthy, smartly dressed, soothing-voiced journalists shared alarming updates directly from Ghorman. Each report conveyed the same anxious message about potential terrorists threatening the planet. They discussed insurgents rejecting the Empire’s proposals for peaceful dialogue.

In every instance, there was no doubt they all sensationalized a bombing incident without verifiable details, instead relying on insinuations, which strongly suggested Ghormans were guilty. The portrayal of the bombing as a “false flag operation” made it appear that the Imperial heroes, who strived for order on a chaotic planet, were cold-blooded murderers in the eyes of the entire galaxy. Even peaceful gatherings such as an oppressed populace convening in a public square for a strike, people harmoniously singing their hymn, were misrepresented as violent uprisings, before any harm was inflicted on anyone.

What stood out most was how the media in Ghorman echoed the Empire’s words, repeating almost verbatim the phrase attributed to Partagaz that blamed “mystifying opposition to imperial standards” for Ghorman’s issues, and relaying this message to everyone they encountered.

The reporters showed no concern for the facts, instead focusing solely on sensational tales. The Empire craftily supplied them with the most attention-grabbing narrative they could, manipulating the media into peddling falsehoods. This deception was only made possible because the media willingly played along, effectively transforming themselves into instruments of oppression. Despite it being nearly impossible for anyone to discern the genuine motive behind the Empire’s arrival in Ghorman, the Empire’s fabricated explanation for their actions was illogical. The absurdity of their cover story only served to highlight this.

In the critical instant when truth about Ghorman could have been revealed – with mysterious mining equipment appearing, no evidence found supporting rebel responsibility for the previous night’s bombing, and the Empire openly abandoning its deception – the media remained indifferent. Instead of reporting the facts, they continued to echo the Empire’s narrative. Even after witnessing a massacre firsthand, the media sided with their authoritarian rulers. The swift action of the Empire suggested it was part of a premeditated plan all along. Yet, the media showed no signs of surprise or disapproval. Instead, they pinned the blame on the Rebellion for the incident. The so-called independent media spoke ominously of “the cost we must bear for our own security.” This chilling statement served as a stark warning to all observers that they could be the next victim of Ghorman’s fate.

The events were shockingly realistic and genuine, causing a sense of horror. Regrettably, numerous media outlets often repeat the same mistakes, with this being particularly prevalent among those in influential roles who are given authority by their platforms. They can unwittingly become voices for wickedness. And when they do so, they let us down. No one is secure when those we expect to keep the powerful in check peddle falsehoods on behalf of fascists. What prospects does truth have if journalists become instruments of oppression? Instead of informing us, they perform despicable tasks for the most malicious individuals.

In essence, Dreena was pleading for truth during Ghorman’s last moments, as she believed that the truth is our most powerful weapon against injustice – a truth that some malevolent empires strive to conceal. If the media won’t share the truth, who will? This was her fervent question. She wanted others to expose what really transpired. Her appeal, more than anyone else, was meant for the media. “If you can receive this message, if you still uphold truth, if you have any faith left in truth, I implore you – mark this and spread it far and wide.” Let her message reach every corner of every galaxy.
