Emma Stone Reveals Why She’s One of the Few Stars Without Instagram

Emma Stone prefers to stay mostly disconnected from the online world, particularly platforms like Instagram. The 37-year-old actress explained she makes this choice to safeguard her own well-being. She shared this while talking to Rolling Stone about an upcoming Super Bowl ad, which she’s working on with a long-time collaborator.

A black-and-white commercial starring Emma Stone will air during the first break in the big game on Sunday, February 8th. In a clever move, the ad shows Stone attempting to buy her own website address – something she actually did in real life while preparing for the campaign.

When asked if her new personal website might become a lifestyle brand, Stone immediately said no. She explained that’s actually why she doesn’t use Instagram, prioritizing her mental health. She admitted to being hesitant about actively participating online, preferring to observe and enjoy content created by others instead.

Emma Stone revealed she hadn’t registered her own domain name until partnering with Squarespace. “I honestly don’t know why I never got around to it,” she explained. She expressed her gratitude to Squarespace for helping her secure the address, saying it would have been confusing for fans if they’d visited EmmaStone.com and found something unexpected. “Squarespace really saved the day,” she said. “Otherwise, the commercial wouldn’t have worked, and it would have been strange to see who knows what on the website.”

Although she doesn’t use social media today, Emma Stone is actually quite familiar with how the internet works. She remembers enjoying building basic websites as a teenager, using platforms like Angelfire and GeoCities in the early 2000s. These early tech projects were something she was really proud of and enjoyed as she was starting her career.

She fondly recalled creating a class presentation in elementary school, remembering how she’d brought people to the library to view it. She particularly enjoyed the creative design aspects of early websites like Angelfire. “I was really proud of things like drop-down menus – all the features you could use back then,” she said. “I was completely fascinated by it.”

I’ve always loved reading online – it started way back with LiveJournal, and I was a dedicated blog reader for years. That’s why I’m now totally hooked on Substack! I’m really investing in it, spending quite a bit of money each month. I especially enjoy reading things like creative writing, fashion takes, and honestly, a little bit of juicy gossip too.

Emma Stone is incredibly busy both professionally and with her reading. She’s nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards on March 15th for her role in the film Bugonia, and is also a producer on the movie, which is up for Best Picture. Bugonia is her fourth film working with director Yorgos Lanthimos, following their previous hits The Favourite and Poor Things.

In the new movie Bugonia, Emma Stone plays a powerful CEO who gets kidnapped by a pair of conspiracy theorists who believe she’s an alien. Jesse Plemons and Alicia Silverstone also star in the film, which continues Stone’s habit of taking on unusual and challenging roles.
