Emma Corrin Reveals They Filmed Nosferatu Scene With Live Rats And Not CGI: ‘Thirty of Them Were on My Bare Chest’

As a seasoned lifestyle expert with a keen eye for the unusual, I must say that Emma Corrin‘s experience during the filming of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu sounds like a truly harrowing ordeal worthy of its gothic horror setting. The use of real rats instead of CGI adds an authenticity that is both terrifying and intriguing, but I can only imagine the dread that must have filled Corrin when she heard the words “30 live rats on your bare chest.

It’s been reported that Emma Corrin went through a quite intense filming experience while working on the upcoming gothic horror movie Nosferatu by Robert Eggers, a film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. This holiday release, scheduled for theater screens on December 25, 2024, boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Bill Skarsgård, Emma Corrin, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney.

As reported by Deadline, Eggers opted to use 5000 trained rats rather than solely relying on CGI, to enhance the impact of the vampire character in the narrative. He discussed how Anna Harding’s character, portrayed by Corrin, had an unfortunate experience during filming when they were required to shoot a scene with 30 live rats crawling across their bare chest, gnawing at their wig.

Eggers also elaborated on the behind-the-scenes horror of Nosferatu by adding that the rats were defecating and urinating on Emma after each take. Corrin expressed their thoughts on filming the harrowing scene to the outlet, saying, “Thirty of them were on my bare chest. Honestly, I was being very brave about it. I was very much stoic, being very British about it, really. And then we were in the scene, and I had no top on, and it was just horrible.”

The actor known for playing Deadpool and Wolverine commented, “The odor was beyond anything you can picture. Also, I hadn’t anticipated the issue with incontinence, but it was awful. It was a grim experience. They seemed to appreciate my hair, so they would often sit on my wig and invade my personal space.

Eggers openly acknowledged that the depicted scene was grotesque and posed a significant challenge for Emma Corrin. At the same time, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, portraying Corrin’s character’s spouse, revealed he advised his wife Sam Taylor-Johnson (who has a fear of rats) to steer clear of the movie due to its graphic rat-filled scenes.

A dark and immersive retelling of the classic tale, Nosferatu reaches cinemas this Christmas.
