Emma Corrin Channels Willy Wonka and Inglourious Basterds for Deadpool & Wolverine Villain Role

As a dedicated fan of both Marvel movies and Emma Corrin’s acting abilities, I am beyond excited about her debut role as Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine. Her inspiration from iconic characters like Christoph Waltz’s chilling performance in Inglourious Basterds and Gene Wilder’s whimsical yet detached Willy Wonka is intriguing, adding layers to my anticipation for her portrayal of this complex villain.

When Emma Corrin discussed her preparation for playing the villain in Deadpool and Wolverine, she shared that she looked up to two iconic characters for inspiration – Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Brad Pitt’s Colonel Hans Landa from Inglourious Basterds. By studying these complex characters, Emma was able to bring depth and nuance to her own villainous portrayal.

In the heart of this movie, there’s a mysterious villain portrayed by Corrin, who is 28 years old, named Cassandra Nova. The film features Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as well. This is Emma’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Emma Corrin talks about inspiration for Deadpool & Wolverine role

At the July 22 world debut, Corrin revealed that Reynolds’ suggestion of using Christoph Waltz’s Oscar-winning portrayal in “Inglourious Basterds” inspired them. Moreover, they acknowledged Willy Wonka as a significant influence in creating their character’s relaxed yet dominant demeanor.

“When preparing for my role, I looked up to Christoph Waltz in ‘Inglourious Basterds.’ Ryan mentioned him as an inspiration, and I was drawn to his charisma. However, I didn’t aim to portray a villain. Instead, Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ served as my muse. His nonchalant and detached demeanor while wielding power intrigued me.”

Corrin’s depiction of the Deadpool and Wolverine antagonist draws inspiration from a blend of famous characters. Reynolds noted that Waltz’s chilling act in “Inglourious Basterds” significantly influenced the character, as well as Gene Wilder’s quirky yet distant portrayal of Willy Wonka.

Emma Corrin debuts Cassandra Nova in the MCU

The actor from The Crown is the initial cast choice to portray Cassandra Nova in the MCU’s movies, even though Corrin’s character isn’t extensively described yet. As per Marvel’s official site, Cassandra Nova stands for a malevolent rendition of Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy in the X-Men series. In Deadpool and Wolverine (at age 55), Jackman teams up with Reynolds’ Deadpool (aged 47) to safeguard their universe, collaborating with another timeline’s Wolverine.

Corrin shared their experiences of dealing with prosthetics and makeup during filming. They mentioned that this part of the production took up a lot of time in hair and makeup, involving the use of a bald cap and fake long fingers. Corrin humorously commented, “It was fantastic for my on-screen presence, not so convenient for personal needs. I always had an assistant with me. It was a humbling experience.”

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: In the Marvel comics universe, I’ve come across a formidable adversary named Cassandra Nova. She possesses an extraordinary telepathic ability that allows her to connect deeply with Charles Xavier, but her motivations are fueled by a desire for revenge and chaos. One of her most infamous actions involved manipulating the Sentinels, resulting in the tragic annihilation of 16 million mutants on the island of Genosha.

Under the guidance of Shawn Levy’s direction, the movie boasts an impressive cast including Morena Baccarin, Matthew Macfadyen, Karan Soni, Rob Delaney, and Leslie Uggams. The anticipated film is scheduled for release on July 26th.
