Eminem’s long-term representative has spoken out regarding the recent incident where a previous sound engineer, Joseph Strange, allegedly stole and leaked Em’s unheard tracks online. Currently, Strange is facing federal charges for this act of theft and unauthorized distribution of Eminem’s unreleased music content.
For 14 years up until 2021, Strange worked at the Detroit rapper’s studio in Ferndale. It’s said that he stole more than 25 unreleased tracks from 1999 to 2018. The FBI found handwritten lyrics, a VHS tape, and hard drives with unpublished music by Em at Strange’s home.
Eminem’s representative commended the FBI for their work, highlighting the significant financial harm they inflicted on Joe Strange. Speaking to People, the publicist said, “Eminem and his team are extremely grateful for the Detroit bureau of the FBI’s comprehensive investigation that resulted in charges against Joe Strange.
The company emphasized the significant financial loss and devaluation of Mathers’ artistic worth, stating they will use every available resource to safeguard his creations, along with those contributed by others involved in the process.
A spokesperson for the rapper stated that the harm inflicted by a reliable employee on Eminem’s artistic reputation and creative authenticity is immense, not just financially, but also for those who have devoted decades to their work. They emphasized that they will persist in taking every possible action to safeguard Eminem’s art, going as far as necessary to ensure its protection.
In January, studio personnel discovered leaks and reported them to the FBI. Em’s team, according to the complaint, was able to find an online image of a list of unpublished tracks. This list appeared to be from internal files within the studio. The evidence suggested that only someone with direct access to the secure environment could have obtained these files.
Should Joe Strange be declared culpable, he may face imprisonment for five years, pay a fine amounting to USD 250,000 due to copyright infringement, and potentially serve an additional 10-year sentence for transporting stolen goods across state lines.
