Eminem’s Mother, Debbie Nelson Passes Away Of Lung Cancer At 69

As a dedicated follower of the lives of influential figures, I find myself deeply saddened by the passing of Debbie Nelson, mother to the iconic rapper Eminem. Having read her memoir and followed their tumultuous relationship over the years, it is clear that she lived a life marked by resilience and determination.

Debbie Nelson, mother of rapper Eminem, passed away at 69 after battling cancer.

As per TMZ’s reports, the mother of the rapper known as “My Name Is” sadly passed away on December 2nd at around evening time in St. Joseph, Missouri, due to difficulties arising from lung cancer. Her ailment was initially detected in September.

1955 saw the birth of Debbie Nelson, on a military base in Kansas. In her memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem (published in 2008), she recounted her tumultuous childhood, growing up in a disorganized home environment. Her parents separated when she was barely ten years old, forcing her to assume family responsibilities at an early age as the eldest of five children. At the tender age of 16, Nelson wed Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., who would later be known as Slim Shady and Eminem’s father. She welcomed their son, Eminem (also known as Godzilla), into the world in October 1972.

For quite some time, her relationship with the acclaimed rap artist (aged 52) was marked by turmoil. In his 2002 song Cleanin’ Out My Closet, he publicly criticized her, and the harsh words about his mother in his lyrics led to a defamation lawsuit worth 11 million dollars being filed against him. The court decided in her favor, but after accounting for legal fees, she only received approximately $1600 in compensation.

In addition to exploring his intricate bond with his mother in various songs such as “My Name Is,” “My Mom,” “Insane,” and an unpublished track called “The Apple” (among others), Em’s mom, Debbie, once put out a CD titled “Set The Record Straight.” This album served as her reaction to the numerous critical lyrics about her that her son had penned.

Regardless of their strained connection, Nelson expressed a desire for reconciliation with her son by advocating for letting go of past grievances and focusing on moving forward. In the year 2013, Em symbolically offered an olive branch and apologized to his mother in his song titled Headlights. He publicly recognized her influence in his life and admitted that he should have thanked her earlier for her role in his upbringing.

Over the past few years, Debbie has been expressing her support for her son from a distance. After Shady was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, she posted on social media and sent a video message to congratulate him. She openly shared her pride over his achievements, recognizing the challenging journey he had undertaken to reach this point.

Marshall, it was important for me not to miss the chance to congratulate you on your Hall of Fame induction today. I hold you dear. I always knew you’d reach this point. It’s been quite a journey. I couldn’t be more proud of you,” she expressed in a video that has since been taken down.

Debbie Nelson is survived by her sons, Eminem and Nathan Mathers.
