It’s ironic, but many actors who become famous in horror films actually don’t enjoy watching them! Jamie Lee Curtis and Neve Campbell, for example, have both admitted they can’t stand scary movies, even though they’re icons of the genre.
These performers seem able to convincingly create terror on screen, but don’t like experiencing it as viewers. Emily Blunt is another example; despite her success in the A Quiet Place films, she’s openly said she dislikes scary movies.
Blunt has proven her versatility, taking on roles in comedies like The Devil Wears Prada and sci-fi action films like Edge of Tomorrow. That makes her work in horror even more surprising, especially since she describes herself as easily frightened.
Emily Blunt’s choice to star in A Quiet Place was likely connected to the fact that her husband, John Krasinski, wrote and directed it. But her initial experience with the thriller genre was driven by a more personal reason.
Back in 2007, she appeared in the supernatural thriller Wind Chill, and she took the role largely to win over her teenage brother. She remembered he hadn’t been a fan of her earlier work and thought this film, with its darker edge, was really cool.
Emily Blunt saw the role as a chance to challenge herself creatively, wanting to portray intense fear convincingly without letting her own worries interfere. She confessed that while she enjoys taking on difficult roles, she actually dislikes horror movies and avoids watching them.
Despite the demanding nature of acting scared, she’s used her personal dislike of the genre to deliver some incredibly believable performances in modern horror films. Currently, the 42-year-old actress is experiencing a high point in her career.
She recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for her supporting role as Dawn Staples in The Smashing Machine, a realistic movie about MMA fighters directed by Benny Safdie and starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. To prepare for the role, she underwent a noticeable physical transformation, including wearing a push-up bra and long acrylic nails, and playfully suggested her performance should have been sponsored by WonderBra.
This summer is shaping up to be a big one for Emily Blunt! She’ll star in Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi movie, Disclosure Day, hitting theaters June 12th. The film, about a worldwide alien invasion, also features stars like Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo. A recent trailer shown during the Super Bowl went viral, showcasing Blunt speaking an eerie alien language.
Fans are also excited to see her return to the fashion world in The Devil Wears Prada 2, which comes out May 1st. She’ll be back on screen with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, playing a high-powered executive at a luxury company. Plus, there’s ongoing talk about a possible sequel to Edge of Tomorrow being filmed later this year – proving that despite not liking to be frightened, Emily Blunt is always up for a challenge and a packed schedule.
