Emilio Estevez Calls St Elmo’s Fire Director Joel Schumacher ‘Bully’, Says He Was ‘Wildly Insecure’

More recently, Emilio Estevez shared some less than favorable memories from the making of the 1985 movie St. Elmo’s Fire. He described working with director Joel Schumacher as a real headache and even went as far as labeling him a “tough taskmaster” or “harsh boss.

In a conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast on April 17, Estevez (age 62) reminisced about Schumacher urging him to enjoy himself wholeheartedly, as he shouted loudly, on the movie set.

Speaking about Schumacher and John Hughes, Estevez commented that Hughes was a collaborative, easygoing director who valued actor input, whereas Schumacher exhibited a high level of insecurity.

In addition, the performer revealed that this encounter provided him with a crucial life lesson, promising that he would refrain from addressing fellow actors in such a manner once he starts directing.

In simple terms, podcast host Josh Horowitz mentioned that he’s been told tales about actor Val Kilmer’s encounters with M. Night Shyamalan.

In a heartfelt reflection, I’m compelled to share the news about the passing of George Clooney, famously recognized for his roles in Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997). This esteemed individual left us in June 2020 at the ripe age of 80.

1985’s St. Elmo’s Fire featured Emesto Estevez alongside Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Demi Moore, Mare Winningham, Judd Nelson, Andie MacDowell, and Andrew McCarthy. Critics gave it unfavorable reviews, but the movie was a hit at the box office, raking in over $37.8 million.

More recently, Estevez caught up with his co-stars from The Breakfast Club – Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy – to celebrate the movie’s 40th anniversary. This gathering was particularly significant as it was the first time all five main actors shared a stage and discussed the film.

At the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2), Estevez made it clear that there is no basis to the rumors of a rift with his The Breakfast Club co-stars, as he holds them in high regard. Meanwhile, Molly Ringwald disclosed she didn’t audition for her role in John Hughes’ 1985 film; instead, Anthony Michael Hall shared that he landed the part via a phone call.

In 1982, Estevez started his acting career in films with the drama movie “Tex.” He has taken on significant roles in “The Outsiders” (1983), “Repo Man” (1984), “Judgment Night” (1993), “Loaded Weapon 1” (1993), and “Mission: Impossible” (1996).
