Emilia Pérez Trailer Out: Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña Starrer Set To Hit Netflix This Year

As a dedicated film enthusiast who’s seen more movies than I can count, I must say that Emilia Pérez seems like a cinematic gem waiting to be unleashed. Having been fortunate enough to witness the raw power of storytelling at prestigious festivals like Cannes, I can confidently say that this film stands out as a unique blend of drama, musical, action, and comedy – a rare mix indeed!

The Spanish musical Emilia Pérez, which caused quite a buzz at this year’s Cannes Film Festival by winning the jury prize and best actress award for its female cast, is scheduled to debut in select cinemas this November. Following its theatrical run, it will be made available on Netflix in the United States, the UK, and Canada.

Under the guidance of French director Jacques Audiard, this movie narrates the individual quests for happiness of four female characters, set in the vibrant landscape of Mexico, as suggested by the official summary.

In the official plot summary, it’s stated that the ruthless cartel leader, Emilia, recruits Rita (Saldana), a lawyer who feels undervalued in her monotonous job, to assist in orchestrating Emilia’s ‘death’, enabling her to start living honestly as her true self. Alongside Gomez and Saldana, the cast also includes Adriana Paz and Edgar Ramirez.

According to Variety, this year, the streamer’s most significant contender for the Oscars is expected to be this movie. After its success at Cannes, the musical drama has been strategically placed as one of the strongest bets for the streaming service giant. As per actress Karla Sofía Gascón, the film offers a blend of genres: drama, music, action, and comedy, ensuring that no single element overshadows the richness of its overall offering.

The movie additionally tracks the transformations and effects on Jesse, the character portrayed by Emilia’s spouse, who is played by Gomez. As Gomez explains to Netflix’s publication Tudum, “Initially, Jessi is quite content with the life she’s living with her family in Mexico, and that’s where she finds her roots.”

At Cannes, Emilia Perez’s performance was met with a prolonged standing ovation, lasting anywhere from nine to eleven minutes. In a competitive bidding war, Netflix emerged victorious, securing the distribution rights for the film in both the US and UK for eight million dollars, outbidding several other studios in the process.

The movie has received acclaim from many reviewers, who appreciate its unique storytelling style. In fact, Variety’s Head Film Critic, Peter Debruge, likened it to “a flower blossoming in a war-torn area.”
