My main issue with Arc Raiders is the strange way raiders are announced during missions. The voices sound artificial – like they’re generated by text-to-speech software. This seems to be a cost-cutting measure, likely because the game has so many collectible items, and each one needs a voiceover.
Beyond the ethical concerns of replacing actors with this technology when so many skilled performers are available, it really pulls you out of the game. It’s especially frustrating because Arc Raiders has incredible sound design – the machines are genuinely frightening, and you can clearly hear every action, giving you vital information during combat. These odd vocalizations just don’t fit with the otherwise exceptional audio quality, which deserves awards.
I asked the executive producer, Aleksander Grøndal, about their design choices for the game and whether they’re working on any fixes or improvements.
We use a mix of voice acting techniques. For major conversations and longer dialogue, we record real actors. For shorter lines and things we couldn’t record previously, we use text-to-speech. It’s about finding the right balance to ensure everything sounds natural and doesn’t break the player’s immersion. If something doesn’t sound right, we adjust it – the goal is to enhance the experience, not detract from it.
Grøndal mentioned that some voice lines aren’t created with text-to-speech technology, but are actually recordings of the original actors. This hints that AI might be used in other ways for voiceovers. However, Embark, the game developer, appears willing to listen to player feedback and potentially adjust how they handle voice acting in their games.
We’re still figuring things out, but we’re committed to improving in these areas as we go, says Grøndal. We view this game as just the beginning, and Embark is dedicated to innovation and continuous improvement. We’re always striving to learn and evolve.
Embark also detailed plans for voluntary wipes in Arc Raiders.
Arc Raiders launches for Xbox, PS5, and PC on October 30.
