Elton John Shares Concerns About His Mortality, but His Husband David Furnish Thinks ‘He’ll Probably Outlive Me’

As a devoted follower who has witnessed Elton John’s extraordinary journey for over three decades, I find myself both moved and inspired by his latest documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late. Having shared the same path with him and his partner David Furnish, I can truly say that their unwavering love and resilience are a testament to the power of enduring partnerships.

In a conversation with PEOPLE, David Furnish discussed an emotional moment from the latest documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late, where Elton John reflects on his own mortality.

In the documentary he co-directed with R.J. Cutler, Furnish discussed his emotional response when John expressed worries about missing significant moments in their children’s lives. “I don’t believe it’s a discussion you’d want to have with your kids,” Furnish shared. He confessed that this particular scene made him quite uneasy.

Elton shares confidence in John’s ability to bounce back. “John has been through many trials, yet he’s as robust as a bull,” said Elton. He commended John’s remarkable tenacity and fortitude, mentioning that the artist seldom misses performances. “He’s a sturdy individual, and he’s a healer. I suspect he’ll live longer than me. He’s simply indestructible,” Elton asserted.

Elton John and Furnish have been a couple for over 30 years, and they have two boys: Zachary, aged 13, and Elijah, who’s 11. In the documentary, John shares his longing to witness significant events in his children’s lives like weddings and parenthood, although he harbors concerns about not being there due to his mortality. He expresses his hope that they will have families of their own and get married, but doubts if he will still be around for those moments.

Additionally, Furnish expressed his thoughts on John’s decision to cease touring. He mentioned that he wishes he could always keep him around, as they have been a team for thirty years, and only now have they reached the moment they’ve long envisioned together.

Apart from revealing that John’s choice to step away from live performances wasn’t hasty, but well-thought-out, he emphasized that he has no intention of hitting the road again and expressed genuine contentment. This shift signifies a major development in their lifestyle, as John was previously a perpetual traveler on tour.

More recently, John and Furnish attended the Toronto International Film Festival side by side, gracing the premiere of “Elton John: Never Too Late.” This event signified John’s initial public outing following his disclosure of a serious eye condition that has affected his sight.

The film traces John’s professional journey, starting with his legendary 1974 concert at Madison Square Garden and concluding with his swan song at Dodger Stadium in 2022. It also delves into his thoughts about his career and his future aspirations.
