Sir Elton John openly discusses the hurdles encountered when producing his recent work. At the unveiling of Who Believes in Angels? Stories from the Edge Of Creation in New York City, the 78-year-old legend admitted that he was struggling during the production of his new album alongside longtime friend Brandi Carlile.
During a conversation with producer Andrew Watt and lyricist Bernie Taupin, moderated by Dave Karger, John confessed that fatigue and self-questioning almost hindered the production of the album.
In the studio, as we were striving to create an exceptional album, it was impossible to foresee the outcome, stated John. “At that time, we lacked songs and a strategy, all we had were four individuals and a great deal of optimism. However, I was drained, exhausted, and plagued with self-doubt.
Five-time Grammy winner John admitted that his hardships caused him to exhibit anger and unacceptable behavior, but he thinks it contributed to the power in his music. Despite the challenges, working with Carlile on an Americana project took him outside his comfort zone of experimental pop. “I’ve never tried anything like this before,” he said, explaining that the creative spark came when he started writing lyrics, even penning a song dedicated to his idol Laura Nyro.
The recording process was also captured in a companion film, which showed John’s raw honesty in all its glory – even when he directly told Carlile to “take a hike, Brandi.” Despite this blunt remark, Carlile viewed it as an expression of John’s uncensored genius. “Nothing can halt the music flowing through him because he doesn’t filter himself,” she explained.
This album explores topics related to the hereafter, seamlessly combining Taylor Carilie’s narrative flair with John’s heartfelt presentation. Songs such as “Little Richard’s Bible” and “Swing for the Fences” vividly display the powerful intensity that arose during the recording process.
On Friday, the question “Who Holds Faith in Angels?” was answered with the release of a short film titled “Tales from the Brink of Existence,” set to debut on YouTube on April 5th. In spite of numerous obstacles, Elton John managed to produce an emotionally resonant and impactful album, expressing gratitude towards Carlile, Watt, and Taupin for their steadfast encouragement that enabled him to complete the project successfully.
