Ellen Pompeo Reveals Why She Left Grey’s Anatomy, Recalls ‘Nightmare’ Scene That Made Her Cry: ‘Felt Like an Animal at…’

Ellen Pompeo shared memories from Grey’s Anatomy that eventually led her to consider leaving the series! Known for portraying Meredith Grey across 19 of the show’s 21 seasons, she rose to stardom in Hollywood. However, after a while, the demanding nature of the role began to weigh heavily on her.

On the Call Me Daddy podcast, Pompeo explained her reason for leaving the show Grey’s Anatomy. She stated, “I simply couldn’t continue with ‘Grey’s’ anymore. It had gotten to a point where I felt like I was just a captive animal in a zoo.

In a conversation with the show’s host, the actress from Daredevil mentioned an “uncomfortable” moment they shared with co-star T.R. Knight during filming, who she considers one of her dearest friends. “T.R. and I are incredibly close friends, yet we had to perform a love scene together, and we were both in tears,” she explained.

In season 2, the pair found themselves required to shoot a love scene, an experience she later described as incredibly awkward and unpleasant. Both she and Knight had reservations about this scene, yet they persevered and eventually completed it against their initial wishes.

However, they demanded another take, asserting excessive “thrusting” was present. Filming the scene once was already taxing; now they had to redo it. Pompeo described this ordeal as a “nightmare,” stating he has never revisited the finished scene.

During the entire shoot, she recalled herself weeping profusely. “I was genuinely sobbing throughout the scene, and those were genuine tears,” she explained. Regarding her departure from the series, it was a difficult decision for her to make, but ultimately, she went through with it.

It was disclosed that she held faith in destiny and felt certain that the parts tailored for her would eventually come her way. Subsequently, she landed a role in ABC’s drama series Station 19, and her most recent production, Good American Family, made its debut on Hulu on March 19.

Grey’s Anatomy is available to stream on Hulu.
