Elle Macpherson Reflects on Battling Bulimia And Alcohol Addiction, Reveals She Drank Shot ‘Littered With Shards of Glass’

As a lifestyle expert, I find Elle Macpherson‘s story to be a powerful testament to resilience, healing, and self-discovery. Her journey, marked by struggles with addiction and bulimia, paints a vivid picture of the complexities that lie beneath the facade of perfection we often see in public figures.

Throughout her life, Elle Macpherson has battled both alcohol dependency and bulimia – challenges that, despite her successful image, are not typically associated with her. In her recently published memoir titled “Elle: Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself,” the Australian supermodel candidly discusses these personal struggles.

Speaking about her past connection with French businessman Arpad “Arki” Busson, who is the father of her two sons Flynn (born 1998) and Cy (born 2003), she recently shared insights into how feelings of failure and anxiety drove her towards alcohol addiction. This was despite being warned against drinking by her health practitioners specializing in natural medicine. In her own words, “The thought of that bottle of champagne in the ice bucket was all I could focus on” after delivering her children.

Amidst Flynn’s frequent hospitalizations and Arki’s mysterious absences, alcohol served as a coping mechanism for her troubles; nearly every evening after putting the children to bed, she would search for vodka to help ease her tension. She also remembered a particular incident where, while opening the vodka bottle, she accidentally shattered the glass; yet, she had already taken a sip from it.

At an Alcoholics Anonymous gathering, Macpherson confessed that she experienced periods of memory loss due to excessive alcohol consumption. She also disclosed a prolonged struggle with bulimia, admitting that on several occasions during the night, she felt compelled to induce vomiting. In her own words, “I’d often isolate myself, drink shots of vodka, create to-do lists and write letters to my loved ones. I would complete household chores, listen to music until about 11 p.m., then retire for the night and black out.

The 60-year-old Australian fashion icon remarked, “In a rush, I downed a drink that might have contained pieces of glass. And I gulped it. At that moment, I recalled how much I enjoyed that sensation, and I’d been craving it for so long.

Elle Macpherson recently discussed her experience with breast cancer, revealing that she opted against chemotherapy and instead focused on nurturing her body for healing. Now, she embraces good health and abstains from alcohol consumption, aiming to avoid a recurrence of cancer. Her memoir, titled “Elle: Life, Lessons & Learning to Trust Yourself,” offers readers an intimate perspective on her inspiring journey towards sobriety, personal health challenges, and achieving balance in life.
