Fans are eagerly awaiting the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, especially with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning as a mentor to a new slayer. However, Eliza Dushku, who played Faith, has made it clear she won’t be returning to acting. She retired in 2017 and now dedicates her time to advocating for psychedelic therapies to treat trauma. She recently produced a Netflix documentary called In Waves and War and, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, confirmed she has no plans to reprise her role as Faith or take on any other acting jobs. Here’s what she had to say:
I’m done with being on camera unless it directly supports my current work and what I’m passionate about now. People often ask if I miss it, but the answer is no. It wasn’t unfulfilling – I enjoyed it for 25 years – but I’ve moved on. I appreciate both this new chapter and the years I spent in front of the camera; they’ve both been valuable parts of my life.
Sarah Michelle Gellar has expressed her desire for many original cast members to return for the new series, even if their characters previously died. For example, Faith was seemingly killed off at the end of season three, but it was later revealed she was in a coma and returned as a guest star on both Buffy and Angel. She was last seen fighting with Buffy in the show’s final episode, meaning she’s still potentially out there. The new series will likely need to address what happened to Faith through conversations between characters.
Though she likely won’t reprise her role as Faith, Dushku is incredibly proud of her work on Buffy. She believes the show offers a comforting look at navigating the challenges of high school and growing up, helping viewers discover who they are. She’s thankful to have been a part of something so impactful and enduring, something that continues to connect with people on a deeply human level.
It’s impossible to predict what will happen, but things can definitely change. Sarah Michelle Gellar repeatedly said she’d never reprise her role as Buffy, yet she eventually did. Perhaps, with enough persuasion, Eliza Dushku could be convinced to play Faith one more time.
