Elijah Wood has made it clear he doesn’t want anyone else to play Frodo Baggins. While promoting his new movie, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, he hinted in an interview with The Times that he’s likely to return to the role for the upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Though he didn’t officially confirm anything, his comments strongly suggest he’s interested in reprising the iconic character.
Rumors started circulating last year that Elijah Wood might return to the Lord of the Rings universe, after his former co-star, Sir Ian McKellen, hinted at both Gandalf and Frodo being involved in a new project. Wood quickly confirmed McKellen’s strong attachment to his role, saying he feels the same way about Frodo. “As long as I’m able, I wouldn’t want anyone else to play Frodo,” Wood stated.
Wood is very excited about the new film, directed by Andy Serkis, and its creative approach. He said everyone involved is hoping the film stays true to the original spirit, but he believes it’s a fun and thrilling story. He described it as feeling like the original team is reunited. As a longtime fan of the series, he’s particularly looking forward to audiences seeing Gandalf’s hat on screen again.
Currently, The Hunt for Gollum is planned to hit theaters on December 17, 2027. Andy Serkis will direct and reprise his iconic role as Gollum, the character he famously played in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. The movie will tell the story of what happened between the events of The Hobbit and the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring, centering on the perilous quest to find Gollum and the crucial role he plays in the fate of the One Ring.
Elijah Wood is continuing to explore different kinds of roles, moving between exciting horror films and acclaimed TV shows. His newest movie, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, arrives in theaters on March 20th.
The film, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, picks up with Grace (Samara Weaving) as she navigates another dangerous game, this time with her sister Faith (Kathryn Newton). Wood joins the cast as a mysterious lawyer, alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Cronenberg.
