Elijah Wood Doesn’t Want Anyone Else Playing Frodo

A new Lord of the Rings movie, titled The Hunt for Gollum, is in early development and is expected to be released in December 2027. Andy Serkis will reprise his role as Gollum and will also be directing the film. The story is set between the events of Bilbo’s birthday party in The Fellowship of the Ring and the formation of the Fellowship itself. There’s talk that several original cast members, including Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, will be returning. While Wood hasn’t officially confirmed his involvement, he recently shared with The Sunday Times (as reported by Variety) his thoughts on someone else playing Frodo.

I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I’m alive and able.

Elijah Wood has hinted at a possible return as Frodo, and it seems increasingly likely he’ll revisit the role. Last August, Ian McKellen suggested a comeback was probable, saying he couldn’t confirm anything officially but was excited about the idea of a new film. Fans are hoping that if Frodo does return, his fellow hobbits – Merry, Pippin, and especially Samwise – will join him, bringing the whole group back together.

It’s been nearly fifteen years since Elijah Wood last appeared as Frodo, with a brief cameo in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. While he still resembles the character, it’s highly likely filmmakers will use digital effects to make him look younger. Viggo Mortensen, however, reportedly feels he’s too old to reprise his role as Aragorn, so a younger actor will likely be cast. Given that Aragorn probably has a more significant part than Frodo in the new film, this makes sense. Ultimately, we’re just thrilled to return to the beautiful landscapes of Middle-earth on the big screen.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has a tentative release date of December 2027.
