The pursuit of fortune, you see, is much like chasing a phantom. One moment it gleams, promising untold riches; the next, it dissolves into mist, leaving only a chill and the lingering scent of regret. The electric vehicle sector, currently the object of so much breathless speculation, is a particularly potent example. A grand illusion, perhaps? The potential is undeniable – a world liberated from the tyranny of gasoline, humming with silent efficiency. But potential, my friends, rarely pays the bills. It is the realization of that potential, the cold, hard cash flow, that separates the titans from the… well, the vanished.
Rivian and Lucid, those ambitious newcomers, are at least attempting a dignified struggle. They bleed money, certainly – a common ailment for those daring to challenge the established order. But they demonstrate a certain… tenacity. Rivian, with its belated but impressive grasp on profitability, and Lucid, inching forward despite a production history resembling a particularly chaotic ballet – they offer a glimmer of hope. A flicker, mind you, but enough to warrant a cautious glance from those of us who traffic in probabilities.
Then there is VinFast. Ah, VinFast. A Vietnamese enigma wrapped in a steel chassis and fueled by… what, exactly? Ambition? The boundless wealth of its parent company? Or simply a reckless disregard for the fundamental laws of financial gravity? The company dominates its domestic market, a fact often trumpeted with undue fanfare. But a kingdom built on sand, however splendid, is still vulnerable to the tide. They speak of state-of-the-art manufacturing, of aggressive international expansion. What they neglect to mention, of course, is the mounting pile of losses – a chasm that grows wider with each passing quarter. It is like watching a man run towards the abyss with a smile on his face, convinced he can fly.
The North Carolina factory, a project once heralded as a symbol of VinFast’s global ambitions, now appears to be shrinking, its promises diluted by the harsh realities of capital expenditure. Incentives, naturally, are also in question. One suspects the state government is beginning to realize they’ve been promised a unicorn, but are likely to receive a rather dilapidated donkey. The fourth-quarter losses, widening as they are, are merely the visible symptom of a deeper malaise. Over three billion lost in a single year, and eleven billion since 2021 – these are not mere accounting errors, my friends. These are wounds that may prove fatal.
To be fair, VinFast’s unit economics are, shall we say, edging in the right direction. R&D accounting for a mere 7% of revenue is a minor miracle, and a reduction in SG&A expenses is… encouraging. But these are crumbs, offered to distract from the feast of losses. It is akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. A valiant effort, perhaps, but ultimately… futile.
VinFast has gone all-in, staking its future on international expansion despite the mounting evidence that it is a losing proposition. It is a gamble of epic proportions, and one that I, as a student of wealth creation, would advise against with the utmost vehemence. Until VinFast demonstrates a genuine path to profitability, narrows its losses, and achieves a semblance of financial balance, it remains a speculative venture – a siren song luring unsuspecting investors towards the rocks. For those willing to embrace the inherent risks of the young EV market, Rivian, Lucid, and even the occasionally erratic Tesla, offer a far more prudent – and potentially rewarding – path. Let the others chase phantoms. I prefer to build empires on solid ground.
