Rich Lambert, head of The Elder Scrolls Online developer ZeniMax Online Studios, has expressed interest in creating new games in addition to their successful MMO. While he’s focused on continuing the success of The Elder Scrolls Online, he also believes it’s important for the studio to explore other projects.
ZeniMax Online Studios was working on a game called Project Blackbird, which aimed to combine elements of Cyberpunk 2077 and Destiny, but the project was canceled due to company-wide cuts at Microsoft.
Lambert shared that he’s eager to continue making games, and the whole team feels the same way. He has plenty of new ideas and hopes to reveal them in the future.
He explained that relying on just one game indefinitely isn’t realistic. While they definitely want *Elder Scrolls Online* to thrive and remain popular for decades, it’s risky to focus all their efforts on a single title.
So, in the interview, Matt Lambert from ZeniMax Online Studios laid out a really bold goal – he wants his studio to be the most successful one within the entire ZeniMax family. He admitted that’s a huge statement, considering studios like Bethesda Game Studios, MachineGames, and id Software are all under the same umbrella. But he wants ZeniMax Online Studios to be the team everyone looks up to, just like how people admire Bethesda Game Studios right now.
Lambert praised Bethesda Game Studios’ impressive history and significant achievements, stating that he wants his team to accomplish the same level of success.
The Elder Scrolls Online first came out on PC in 2014, and was later released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2015. In 2021, it became available on the newer Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles. Originally, players needed a subscription to play, but it now offers a free-to-play option. The game has grown to have over 25 million players worldwide.
While many online games have been around for a long time, EverQuest stands out. It’s been active for over 10 years, even longer than popular games like World of Warcraft (launched in 2004) and The Lord of the Rings Online (launched in 2007), both of which still require subscriptions.
Bethesda continues to support The Elder Scrolls Online and is also developing The Elder Scrolls 6, though a release date hasn’t been announced.
