According to the lead developers of The Elder Scrolls Online, Rich Lambert and Nick Giacomini, the game is currently seeing increased interest thanks to both the excitement for the upcoming Elder Scrolls 6 and the warm response to the remastered version of Oblivion.
It’s reasonable to assume that a new Elder Scrolls game, like Oblivion: Remastered, could hurt the popularity of The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO). Similarly, the anticipation for Elder Scrolls 6 might make ESO, which is over a decade old, seem outdated. However, according to Lambert and Giacomini, that hasn’t been the case at all.
Many Elder Scrolls Online players are approaching the game as if it were a single-player experience, essentially passing the time until the release of Elder Scrolls 6, which they are eagerly anticipating.
We get asked about that all the time,” Lambert explained to IGN. “It’s funny, because at gaming shows and events over the years, people constantly ask about ‘The Elder Scrolls 6.’ I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been asked when it’s coming out or what it even is! But it’s important to remember that a different team is working on that game.
Look, people *really* love Elder Scrolls, and I get it! It’s become a second home for a lot of us – we just want to keep playing in that world, and thankfully, the developers are letting us do just that.
Lambert and Giacomini also noted that ESO saw an increase in players after the release of Oblivion: Remastered, probably because the game brought new and returning players to the Elder Scrolls series who then decided to try ESO.
Lambert mentioned the release of the Oblivion remaster had a significant impact. They anticipated it would boost player numbers for a period, and after a brief dip, that’s exactly what happened – similar to what they saw with the Fallout TV series. They were pleased with the positive results and found the trend noteworthy.
Nick Giacomini explained that after the release of [Oblivion Remastered], ZeniMax Online experienced a significant surge in both new players and those who hadn’t played in a while, and this positive trend lasted for a considerable period. He described it as a really exciting development.
It was really disappointing to hear that ZeniMax Online had to cancel their new MMO, codenamed Blackbird, after the recent layoffs at Xbox. But even with all the changes happening in the gaming industry, I’m still so glad The Elder Scrolls Online is going strong – it’s amazing it’s still being updated and enjoyed after twelve years!
