FromSoftware’s Nightreign was bound to be intriguing, given their knack for incorporating multiplayer aspects into their games. However, a standalone multiplayer journey represents an entirely new challenge for the developer.
In simpler terms, Nightreign is structured for teams of three, placing you in an intense fight-for-survival scenario reminiscent of battle royale games. Over the course of two grueling days, you’ll engage with merciless bosses to build up your power. The climax occurs on the third and last day when you confront the Nightlord.
As a gamer, I must admit that FromSoftware usually knocks it out of the park with their critically acclaimed games. However, Nightreign seems to have missed the bullseye a bit, scoring 78 on Metacritic and 79 on OpenCritic, which they classify as a “Strong” score.
Elden Ring Nightreign Debuts To “Strong” Review Scores

To start, top-mob.com‘s own 4.5/5 review from executive editor, James Lucas, who says that Nightreign has “perfected the Soulslike multiplayer format.” They praised the strategic possibilities of the game’s boss fights, saying that experiencing the “Soulslike loop in a microcosm” was “unbelievably satisfying.” They were critical of the lack of cross-play, however, which is a big omission in a multiplayer-focused title in 2025.
According to Jordan Middler from VGC, Elden Ring’s Nightreign edition received a score of 3 out of 5. He expressed that as gameplay continues, it can become monotonous and the requirement for flawless runs diminishes the overall fun. His review ends by suggesting that the influence of one of the greatest RPGs ever made looms over what is an inconsistent multiplayer experience.
In his 3.5 out of 5 review for Nightreign, GamesRadar+’s Will Sawyer expresses that it’s comparable to Elden Ring at its harshest moments, but at least players can endure together. He notes that the game can transition swiftly from thrilling to aggravating based on a run’s progress, and he wonders about the game’s long-term appeal.
According to Game Informer’s Wesley LeBlanc, the game’s battle system and level of challenge are highly commendable. However, he expresses concerns about certain aspects like matchmaking and procedural generation, leading him to award the game a score of 8 out of 10.
