Elden Ring Nightreign DLC Will Feature A Poisonous Swamp

FromSoftware, the game studio behind titles like Elden Ring and Dark Souls, and director Hidetaka Miyazaki seem to have a fondness for poisonous swamps. It’s a running joke among fans that nearly all their games include one, often draining the player’s health. This has become such a trademark that players even worried their latest game, Armoured Core 6, would feature one too.

The Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion didn’t include any swamps, which was a welcome break for players. However, the new ‘Forsaken Hollows’ DLC seems to be bringing swamps back into the game – even the developers acknowledge players often joke about the game’s tendency to include them!

Poisonous Swamps Are Back In Elden Ring Nightreign‘s DLC

Speaking with GameSpot, director Junya Ishizaki playfully acknowledged the running joke about swamps in FromSoftware games. He explained that there isn’t an official rule requiring them, but a swamp area seems to naturally appear during development. He said it often happens that someone suggests a swamp before anyone even realizes it, and then the idea just takes on a life of its own.

I realize now that the original Nightreign game didn’t include a swamp, so adding it later with the DLC makes sense. It seems like our games just naturally end up having one, even though we don’t specifically plan for it. It just sort of happens.

According to GameSpot’s Tamoor Hussain, the new swamp areas in The Forsaken Hollows will be dangerous, causing effects like poison and scarlet rot. However, players who brave these swamps could find a valuable reward.

FromSoftware seems to have a habit of including swamps in their games. It’s almost as if Hidetaka Miyazaki, the studio’s president, has a secret agreement to guarantee every game is a hit!
