Eddie Murphy recently revealed the reason he unexpectedly left the 2007 Oscars after losing the Best Supporting Actor prize. He explained it wasn’t due to frustration or being upset about the loss.
Murphy recently told Entertainment Weekly that things got awkward after he didn’t win, as people kept offering their condolences. He explained he didn’t want to spend the whole night being consoled by other stars.
Murphy explained that after losing at the Oscars, people kept comforting him by patting his shoulder. Even Clint Eastwood came over and rubbed his shoulder, which made Murphy realize he didn’t want to spend the whole night being consoled, so he decided to leave.
Murphy clarified that he left quietly and intentionally, emphasizing it wasn’t a heated or impulsive departure. He explained, “I didn’t leave in anger. I just decided I didn’t want to spend the evening being treated like someone who needed pity.”
In that year, Eddie Murphy received an Oscar nomination for his performance as James “Thunder” Early in the movie Dreamgirls. He was nominated alongside Mark Wahlberg, Jackie Earle Haley, Djimon Hounsou, and Alan Arkin. Ultimately, Alan Arkin won the award for his role in Little Miss Sunshine.
Murphy remembered seeing Little Miss Sunshine before it came out and immediately recognizing Alan Arkin’s performance as something exceptional. He confidently predicted Arkin would win an Oscar, even months in advance.
Murphy recalled that Jeff Katzenberg showed him ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ half a year before its release. After watching Alan Arkin’s performance, Murphy immediately told Katzenberg that it was the kind of acting that could win an Oscar.
Murphy playfully predicted that someone might win an Oscar by taking it from another presenter, and jokingly said that’s exactly what happened when his own Oscar was ‘stolen.’ However, he quickly added with a laugh that he didn’t actually feel robbed.
Dreamgirls performed well at the 2007 Oscars, receiving eight nominations and winning two awards: one for sound mixing and another for Best Supporting Actress, which went to Jennifer Hudson.
