During an interview on The Ellen Show in 2024, Ed O’Neill shared that he had reservations about the potential success of Modern Family at its outset.
The well-known TV sitcom, broadcast between 2009 and 2020, earned a great deal of acclaim as one of the funniest shows on television. However, humorously, O’Neill confessed that he didn’t have high hopes initially.
In reference to his initial table reading, he commented, “I took my seat, surveyed the room, gave a friendly wave, and pondered, ‘I’m not familiar with any faces here; none of them seem to be recognized names.’
Host Ellen DeGeneres playfully wondered if he had expected it to be his program. In response, Ed O’Neill humorously retorted, “Not at all, I believed it would be a non-appearance.
Initially hesitant, O’Neill’s perspective transformed swiftly during the initial reading session. “Within just two or three minutes, I found myself exclaiming, ‘Who are these people?’,” he reminisced. “They were all so talented. The children, everyone was outstanding. I thought, ‘Wow, we might have a chance here.’
In his remarks, O’Neill commended the skills of the cast, such as Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, and others, who would eventually become widely recognized figures. The collective talent of this group significantly contributed to the show’s triumph, with several members receiving multiple Emmy Awards for their performances.
The long-running television series “Modern Family,” created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, spanned an impressive 11 seasons and produced 250 episodes on the network ABC. This popular show delved into the lives of multiple families connected in Los Angeles, using a mockumentary approach to tell their stories.
1) The show amassed 22 Emmy wins, among them being five for Best Comedy Series. O’Neill portrayed Jay Pritchett, the family patriarch, offering an acting feat that has come to symbolize his professional legacy.
