Early Reviews for ‘The Penguin’ Suggest It’s Shaping Up to Be a Masterpiece

As a die-hard Batman fan with over three decades of fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that the early reviews for “The Penguin” have me absolutely giddy! Having grown up watching Tim Burton’s dark and gritty take on Gotham City, this new series seems to be a perfect continuation.

More than two years have passed since the release of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”, featuring Robert Pattinson, in movie theaters. This film garnered praise from both critics and viewers due to its moody aesthetic and emphasis on Batman’s detective skills.

Matt Reeves is currently working on the follow-up titled “The Batman – Chapter II“, scheduled for release in October 2026. In the interim, enthusiasts can look forward to delving deeper into this dark crime tale: a standalone series focusing on The Penguin, with Colin Farrell returning as the infamous antagonist.

In the narrative of “The Penguin,” events unfold one week following those seen in “The Batman Part 1.” With Carmine Falcone’s demise, Oswald Cobblepot, also known as the Penguin, aims to capitalize on the power void that has been created. He engages in a fierce struggle against Sofia Falcone, a conflict that Colin Farrell characterizes as both grim and ominous, as depicted in this chilling series.

The show boasts an impressive cast including Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar, Michael Kelly as Johnny Viti, Shohreh Aghdashloo as Nadia Maroni, Deirdre O’Connell as Francis Cobb, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, James Madio as Milos Grapa, Scott Cohen as Luca Falcone, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, Carmen Ejogo as Eve Karlo, and Theo Rossi as Dr. Julian Rush.

Now that the review restrictions have been lifted a few days prior to its premiere, initial responses are surfacing. The series is currently boasting a remarkable 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, derived from 31 critic reviews!

This HBO series significantly enhances the DC franchise, offering an outstanding contribution. The intricately developed characters propel the storyline, and it’s during character-focused episodes that “The Penguin” truly shines.

Alex Maidy, JoBlo’s Movie Network

As I step into the role of The Penguin, I can’t help but feel that I’m carving my name among the pantheon of legendary live-action comic book villains. It’s a thrill, an honor, and a challenge that I’m eager to embrace.

Jacob Fisher, Discussing Film

If you’ve seen Cristin Milioti in “Palm Springs” and “How I Met Your Mother,” you won’t find it surprising how captivating an actor she is. However, it’s the raw intensity she infuses into her character that truly amplifies her performance.

Fay Watson, Total Film

Appreciation is due for a spin-off series in the style of a superhero, which serves as an allegory inspired by Trump, considering it offers a unique perspective. Also, it’s worth noting that Farrell effectively hides his appealing personality under 50 pounds of rubber, yet his impressive skills remain evident.

Ben Travers, IndieWire

According to initial feedback, it seems like “The Penguin” will make a powerful contribution – perhaps even an exceptional piece – to Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” universe! Don’t miss its debut on Max this coming Thursday, September 19th.
