Early DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Concept Art Shows Wade Meeting the Comic Book Avengers

As a lifelong Marvel enthusiast who has spent countless hours poring over comic books and their various iterations, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgic longing upon seeing Andy Park’s concept art for Deadpool and Wolverine’s Multiverse road trip. The thought of Deadpool landing smack dab in the middle of the iconic Avengers formation, surrounded by his comic book counterparts, is nothing short of exhilarating.

Initially, the idea of Deadpool and Wolverine underwent multiple changes before a final concept was established. At one time, it was intended to be a road trip film starring Wade and Logan. However, when the Multiverse became a significant aspect of the storyline, Marvel Studios artist Andy Park proposed a sequence where Deadpool would journey through various universes in the Multiverse, eventually arriving at Earth-616, the comic book version of the Marvel Universe. In this universe, he sketched a scene depicting Deadpool landing in the famous shot from the Avengers movie, but with the heroes replaced by their comic book counterparts. You can view Andy Park’s concept art, which he posted on Instagram, below:

Who influenced the concept art created by Andy Park? We notice a Deadpool resembling Rob Liefeld’s style, and a Captain America reminiscent of Jack Kirby. The Hulk seems to be in the vein of Sal Buscema, who has been a longtime penciler for Incredible Hulk comics. Thor evokes the artistic feel of Walter Simonson. Hawkeye appears to be modeled after Al Milgrom’s depiction of Clint Barton from West Coast Avengers, and Black Widow seems to emulate Jim Lee’s portrayal in an Uncanny X-Men issue. Lastly, Iron Man with his white and red “Silver Centurion” armor seems to be inspired by the art of Mark Bright.

Unfortunately, this idea didn’t progress beyond the planning phase, and it would have been thrilling to witness it unfold on-screen. It seems likely that Kevin Feige might have intervened in this case, given his strong commitment to the “Sacred Timeline” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which is Earth-616. This term is well-known among longtime comic book enthusiasts as it refers to the primary universe of monthly Marvel Comics, where the designation “Earth-616” was first used. Fans like Iman Vellani, who stars in ‘Ms. Marvel’ and is a big fan of Feige, often remind him of this fact. It’s possible that Feige wanted to avoid sparking a debate about which universe truly is Earth-616, so they’ve temporarily put the discussion on hold until ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ revives it once more.
