Eames House Reopens Following Los Angeles Wildfires

Summary

  • The Eames House (Case Study House #8) in Los Angeles has reopened to visitors after a five-month closure for restoration following smoke damage from wildfires.
  • For the first time, visitors will also have access to Charles and Ray Eames’ adjacent studio and personal workspace, offering a unique insight into their creative process and family life.

After being closed due to the LA wildfires, the Los Angeles home designed by Charles and Ray Eames, which they used as a family residence, is now open to visitors once more.

Though Case Study House #8, another name for it, just dodged complete demolition, it endured a lot of smoke damage, leading to its closure for about five months while intensive renovation work was carried out.

Visitors can now come back just like before, yet they’ll have an extra treat – a chance to explore the Eames’ studio and private work area situated next to the main living area.

The section of the house next to the primary living area, previously closed to the public, gives a unique peek into the private, intimate aspects of Charles and Ray’s artistic collaboration.

Additionally, as described by grandson Eames Demetrios, it served as a makeshift guest room when the family visited.

He described the studio as serving as an expanded living area during an interview with Getty. According to him, Charles and Ray Eames ultimately had five grandchildren. When we all visited together, we would stay here; if it was just us, we could reside in the main house instead.

As a devoted admirer, I had the privilege of capturing the breathtaking facade of the Eames House in the year 2025. The image was skillfully composed by me, Chris Mottalini. As the Eames House reopens, the Eames family plans to introduce the “Charles & Ray Eames Foundation”. This new entity aims to safeguard and honor the far-reaching impact they’ve left on various fields.

Demetrios, as the head of both the Eames Office and the Charles & Ray Eames Foundation, expressed that it’s been a privilege for us, their grandchildren, to carry on their legacy and keep their influence widespread.

Beyond their famous work in furniture and architecture, they delved into philosophy, photography, art, exhibit design, toy creation, and lighting design as well. It’s crucial for us to preserve these diverse contributions for future generations. This upcoming section focuses on succession planning and looking forward towards the next generation.

In addition to its conservation efforts, the foundation seeks to promote global initiatives that embody the design philosophy of the Eameses.

As Adrienne Luce, Executive Director of the Charles & Ray Eames Foundation, expressed, ‘Charles once remarked,’All things are interconnected in time.’ Our Foundation embraces this deep understanding as we strive to create significant links, foster curiosity, and inspire exploration across various fields, cultures, and age groups.

Visit the official Eames Office website for detailed information about their house and foundation, and arrange your tour by scheduling a visit.
