Today marks the end of online play for Need for Speed: Rivals, as EA has officially shut down the game’s servers. This brings an end to the 2013 racing game’s online features.
The game isn’t being removed from stores. You can still purchase and play it on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Plus, if you have a PS5 or Xbox Series X, you can play it through backward compatibility.
Since most of its online features are no longer available, there’s not much point in getting it now.
According to sources, the game’s servers will shut down on October 6th, after which players will only be able to play offline. However, recent Steam data indicates that very few people are revisiting the game before it goes offline, with the number of active players staying just above 100 in the last day.
Need for Speed: Rivals was created through a collaboration between Ghost Games and Criterion Games and released by EA. As the twentieth installment in the popular Need for Speed series, it was also the first time Ghost Games led development of a main Need for Speed game.
When it first came out, the game was well-received by critics and even won the “Best Racing Game” award at E3 2013. Later, a mobile version called Need for Speed: No Limits was released in 2015, followed by a completely new version of the game.
Even though Rivals’ online services are being discontinued, players can still play the game offline. This shutdown shows how difficult it is to keep older games with online features running, particularly when they’re still sold but don’t have many active players anymore.
