EA cancels two projects at Respawn, lays off developers

It’s been reported that Electronic Arts has let go of around 300 to 400 employees and canceled additional projects at Respawn Entertainment. One of the canceled games, as per Bloomberg, was a planned shooter game based in the Titanfall universe.

According to Respawn, they have terminated two experimental projects in their early stages and made certain staff changes that have affected not just the employees involved with these canceled projects, but also those working on Apex Legends, a live-service battle royale game, and the upcoming installment of the popular Star Wars Jedi series.

Respawn has pledged to work on two projects: Star Wars Jedi 3 and a new Apex Legends venture. This new Apex Legends project is intended to offer innovative experiences that challenge the limits of competitive play, while still preserving the essence of competition, originality, and honesty that their community has come to anticipate.

Last year, just like Respawn is experiencing now, there were significant changes at the company. These changes included the termination of a Star Wars-themed shooter game and a series of job cuts.

In the year 2026, the forthcoming title from Respawn in collaboration with Bit Reactor will be Star Wars: Zero Company, which is destined for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and personal computers (PC).

Due to a less-than-anticipated performance of EA Sports FC 25 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, EA has adjusted its financial projections for the current year to lower figures. Last week, the sports division revealed the launch dates for Madden NFL 26 and College Football 26, with F1 25 already scheduled for release this summer. As per tradition, FC 26 and NHL 26 will follow suit in due course.

At present, the most anticipated title appearing to be in development, located in the oven (meaning under active production), appears to be the new Battlefield game. This project is collaboratively handled by multiple studios, with Respawn Entertainment’s co-founder, Vince Zampella, leading the charge.
