EA Cancels In-Development BLACK PANTHER Game

Over the last few months, highly anticipated superhero games have faced challenges. Unfortunately, the Wonder Woman game developed by Monlith Games was recently canceled, and now another iconic superhero’s video game is being shelved. According to IGN, Electronic Arts has decided to cease production on their Black Panther game and close down developer Cliffhanger Games. The announcement of the Black Panther game wasn’t too long ago, in 2023. The developers had planned a single-player, action-adventure, open-world game for this project. The agreement between Marvel and EA for the development of Black Panther was part of a three-game deal that also included Iron Man and an unidentified third title.

2023 marked the establishment of Cliffhanger Games, with several developers from the renowned Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor project also working on the development of the Black Panther game. However, EA Entertainment president Laura Miele announced the cancellation of this game via an internal email to her team. She explained that the closure of Cliffhanger Games was aimed at directing our creative efforts towards the most promising growth areas. This decision may not provide solace to those who lost their jobs there, particularly the team members who spent the last two years working on Black Panther. Yet, such incidents are unfortunately common in the dynamic gaming industry.

The game based on the Black Panther character was set in Wakanda, but details about its storyline and the specific Black Panther it focused on remain unclear. Whether T’Challa, Shuri, or King T’Chaka served as the central character is unknown. However, given the appeal of this Marvel property, a suitable Black Panther game may surface eventually. Unfortunately, the effort poured into creating this particular game will not be publicly released.
