EA Assures Mass Effect 5 is Moving Forward Despite Massive BioWare changes

Recently, Electronic Arts (EA) has reassigned several BioWare staff members to different EA departments. This shift aims to enhance the company’s adaptability.

Gary McKay, the general manager of BioWare, has announced that a dedicated team is currently developing the next installment of Mass Effect. This group consists of experienced members such as Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, and Parrish Ley. McKay emphasized their commitment to delivering an exceptional gaming experience. Furthermore, he clarified that at this point in development, they don’t require the entire studio’s involvement.

Following this, a developer from Dragon Age: The Veilguard announced on Bluesky that they had been terminated. Electronic Arts (EA) did not confirm any specific layoffs but emphasized that BioWare is completely dedicated to Mass Effect. They expressed confidence that the studio now has the appropriate personnel for this phase of development.

As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed that the curtain has fallen on Dragon Age: Veilguard, with its recent update seemingly marking the end of its journey. On the other hand, Mass Effect 5, which was announced back in 2020, appears to be still in its early stages, presumably in pre-production.

Last August 2023, I found myself among a group of around 50 colleagues who were let go from BioWare to enhance our agility and concentration. Back then, our leader, McKay, emphasized the importance of balancing our project requirements with maintaining top-notch quality standards.

Recent actions from EA suggest uncertainty surrounding BioWare’s upcoming projects, as they are currently focusing all efforts on the development of the next Mass Effect game. This has left fans and industry experts alike pondering about BioWare’s future plans.
