For over four decades since Steven Spielberg’s film “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” was first released, several of the original models used for the beloved alien have deteriorated due to age. However, some managed to withstand the passage of time, and one such model will soon be put up for auction at Sotheby’s, potentially fetching a whopping million dollars. As we discovered via Boing Boing, this 3-foot-tall artifact comes from the collection of special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi. His daughter has brought this E.T.-related model, along with other related items, to the renowned auction house for bidding.
This model belongs to an auction titled “There Are Such Things: 20th Century Horror, Science Fiction, and Fantasy on Screen.” Alongside it, there are other valuable items that represent important moments in the history of fantasy and sci-fi films. Items from “The Wizard of Oz,” “Total Recall,” “Blade Runner,” “Labyrinth,” “Jurassic Park,” and David Lynch’s “Dune” are all part of this auction. Interestingly, they also have three 1964 issues of “Analog Magazine” that contain the initial serialized chapters of Frank Herbert’s novel “Dune.” Contrasting with the E.T. model, these will only cost a few thousand dollars.
If you appreciate timeless horror films like those from Universal Monsters, you’ll find several posters related to these iconic movies in an auction titled “There Are Such Things.
