As a long-time theater enthusiast who has spent countless hours singing along to musical numbers with my friends, I wholeheartedly agree with Dwayne Johnson‘s sentiment. The joy of a musical lies not only in its storytelling but also in the shared experience of singing together. There’s something magical about losing yourself in a song, especially when surrounded by others who feel the same way.
With “Moana 2” from Disney set to premiere in November, featuring Dwayne Johnson once more embodying the demigod Maui, he offers this suggestion for audiences: if you’re captivated by a musical and can’t help but enjoy it, feel free to join in the singing!
This occurs following a discussion sparked by the musical movie “Wicked,” as certain cinemas have advised viewers to maintain silence throughout the playback.
Johnson expressed his opinions on the red carpet, stating, “Go ahead and sing! After all, you’ve spent your valuable money to attend, and you’re here for it. Sing along!” He feels that participating in the music is an essential aspect of the enjoyment provided by a musical performance.
On the other hand, some people don’t believe that singing along in movie theaters is acceptable. For instance, during the premiere of “Wicked,” AMC Theatres requested patrons not to sing via pre-show announcements. This was a part of their policy aimed at preventing disturbances caused by disruptive behavior.
Ryan Noonan, speaking on behalf of AMC, underlined this point to The Indianapolis Star, expressing that although they value the excitement, the enjoyment of all spectators needs to remain a priority.
The topic has garnered the notice of Ariana Grande, known for her role in “Wicked”, who expressed during a film’s press tour, ‘We empathize with your urge to sing along… We value your feelings… However, if someone hurls popcorn at you, their phone or something, perhaps consider pausing.’

It’s worth noting that Universal Pictures is planning to debut a sing-along adaptation of “Wicked” from Christmas onwards. This new version invites audiences to join in with the singing, taking into account the mixed reactions towards this topic.
For now, it would be best for viewers to refrain from singing along to their favorite songs during standard showings of the musical.
