As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has seen his fair share of blockbusters, I must say that Red One has truly taken the holiday season by storm! While its theatrical performance might have been a bit rollercoaster-like, its triumph on Amazon Prime Video is nothing short of spectacular. With over 50 million viewers worldwide in just its opening weekend, it’s safe to say that this movie has become an instant hit in the digital realm.
By December 15, 2024, the movie “Red One” has garnered a staggering $175.5 million globally. In the US and Canada, it made $92.5 million, while overseas screenings brought in another $83 million.
Initially projected to gross between $25-$40 million in 4,032 cinemas domestically, Red One exceeded expectations by making $10.9 million on its opening day, including $3.7 million from previews. By the end of its first weekend, it had raked in a total of $32.1 million and claimed the number one spot at the box office.
Over its second weekend, the film saw a significant decline of 59%, earning $13.3 million, finishing in third position, with Wicked and Gladiator II taking the top spots ahead of it.
Despite having a varied response at the cinema, Red One thrived on Amazon Prime Video, setting a new record as the most-watched film debut for Amazon MGM Studios with approximately 50 million viewers worldwide during its premiere weekend on the platform (spanning four days). According to Amazon’s reports.
Red One continues to run in theaters across North America on more than 3,000 screens and internationally on approximately 3,300 screens. The cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, Wesley Kimmel, and J.K. Simmons.
Under the direction of Jake Kasdan and scripted by Chris Morgan, this PG-13 holiday action-comedy tells the story of Callum Drift (played by Dwayne Johnson), the leader of North Pole security. He joins forces with the tricky hacker Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans) in a mission to save Santa Claus who has been abducted just before Christmas.
