In Dwarf Fortress, strong walls and moats usually create a false sense of security – your fortress will eventually fail, but rarely due to enemy invasion. That’s about to change! A big update releasing on November 3, 2025, will significantly expand siege warfare in the game.
It’s no longer enough to just cut off your supplies to defeat you. After this update, attackers will be able to break down your walls with battering rams, and they’ll also have cavalry to counter any attacks you launch. Get ready – mounted units are now in the game!
Invaders don’t just use battering rams. Trolls can act as advance teams, using pickaxes and blocks to create paths for their armies. Enemy engineers can also dig tunnels and stairs to bypass your defenses and break into your fortress, and they’ve even learned to build bridges over your moats.
We’ve improved defenses against threats by making ballistas and catapults more powerful. Dwarves now have new options too, like the quick-firing bolt thrower. Don’t forget that traditional traps are still effective, so it’s a good idea to remember how to use them!
