Each narrative thread was neatly wrapped up in ways that leave us eagerly anticipating what’s next. With one chapter coming to a close, another is poised to begin. Here’s our comprehensive recap of the ‘Dune: Prophecy’ season one finale.
The Dune: Prophecy Season 1 Finale Answers Our Burning Backstory Questions with Final Flashbacks
In the concluding episode of “Dune: Prophecy,” we ventured into the past once again to unravel the mysteries surrounding the origins of our present-day narrative. Let me share with you some insights we gleaned from this journey.
After Valya Harkonenn killed Dorotea, Valya, Tula, Francesca, and Kasha Lied About It
In the universe of Dune: Prophecy, a crime as grave as murder carries significant weight, yet Valya managed to evade punishment for killing Dorotea by presenting the truth in a manner that was advantageous. The group consisting of Valya, Tula, Francesca, and Kasha each disclosed aspects of the situation that were accurate, but manipulated these details to conceal Valya’s involvement in the murder.
Valya and the Sisters Loyal to Her Murdered All But on the Sisterhood Loyal to Dorotea in the Dune: Prophecy Finale Episode
However, deceit alone wasn’t sufficient to conceal Sister Dorotea’s demise. Valya and her followers trapped those nuns who remained faithful to Sister Dorotea and her beliefs. Using the Voice, they compelled these sisters to make a chilling choice: either take their own lives like Sister Dorotea did, or align with Valya, proclaiming her as the new Mother Superior. Almost all of the sisters succumbed to this demand. The remaining few were slaughtered by Valya, Tula, Francesca, and Kasha. Their deaths were gruesome, self-inflicted, enforced by the Voice to comply with their own hands.
In the final episode of season one, it’s unveiled that Valya became Mother Superior and took charge of the sisterhood, as seen in Dune: Prophecy, this is the manner in which she came to be.
Tula Tells Valya She’s Pregnant, But Pretends to Miscarry and Sends the Child Away, Giving Us Desmond Hart’s Dune: Prophecy Backstory
Alongside all the tragedy unfolding, there’s a glimmer of life as well. Tula Harkonnen is carrying Orry Atreides’ child, marking the first time the Harkonnen and Atreides lineages intertwine genetically. The genetic database foretells that this child, whom we now recognize as Desmond Hart, will possess immense power. Valya desires to nurture the baby together with Tula and exploit the child’s abilities. However, Tula has other ideas in mind. In the finale of Dune: Prophecy, it is revealed that Tula feigned a miscarriage and sent Desmond, her son, away to reside far from the Sisterhood, Harkonnens, Valya, and herself. As it turned out, this decision did not bode well for young Desmond Hart. Yet, it’s likely Tula couldn’t have foreseen the consequences.
Now, with the conclusion of season one, we’ve pieced together each of our principal characters’ journeys that led them to their current positions within the series, Dune: Prophecy.
Valya Harkonnen Destroys Her Old Plans as The Power Continues to Shift on Dune: Prophecy
Currently, Valya Harkonnen acknowledges that her previous schemes for “Dune: Prophecy” are no longer viable. She becomes aware that Princess Ynez has been detained for attempting to aid Kieran Atreides, who was exposed as a rebel and branded a traitor. Ynez remains at the forefront of Valya’s thoughts, as she continues to believe that she is destined to rule the Imperium as a Sister. In light of these developments, Valya now devises a plan for Sister Francesca to assassinate Emperor Corinno, thus initiating a new period of governance. She presents Francesca with a Gom Jabbar to use against Javicco Corinno. Although Francesca agrees to the task, she appears reluctant and displeased about it.
Valya herself takes Theodosia with her to help Ynez escape from prison. Theodosia is confirmed in this Dune: Prophecy season one finale episode to have been bred by Tlulaxan geneticists and is a version of Dune‘s Face Dancers. Valya goes to the Emperor and tells him harsh truths about his life, especially that Fransceca doesn’t really love him and was merely working for the sisterhood. She gets herself arrested and is brought to the cells where Ynez and Keiran are being kept.
Simultaneously, Theo assumes the identity of Ynez. Together with Valya, they manage to liberate the princess. However, Ynez demands that Kieran Atreides also be released, which Valya reluctantly agrees to. Theo remains behind to create a diversion while Ynez, Kieran, and Valya make their escape. Valya directs them towards Arrakis, instructing them to find an escape pod, but she departs to confront Desmond Hart separately.
What is Dune‘s Gom Jabbar?
In the world of Dune, one of its iconic weapons, often referred to as the Gom Jabbar, is also known as “the high-handed enemy.” This title is significant because it’s the name of the final episode in Dune: Prophecy. Although the Gom Jabbar isn’t explicitly mentioned in this episode, it’s a handheld device tipped with meta-cyanide poison. Valya explains this very description when she hands the weapon to Francesca for the purpose of killing Javicco. Interestingly, the Gom Jabbar makes its appearance in Dune: Prophecy as well.
Desmond Hart Betrays Emperor Corrino and Supports Empress Natalya Instead
In a different part of Salusa Secundus, tension continues in the final episode of season one from ‘Dune: Prophecy’. Desmond Hart assumed the Emperor would heed his advice about getting rid of the Sisterhood. However, it’s revealed that Emperor Corinno is hesitating, largely due to the arrival of Sister Francesca, whom he has bonded with. This development displeases Desmond Hart immensely, causing him to shift his allegiance in favor of Empress Natalya. Together, they plan to rule Javicco and the Imperium jointly. Unfortunately for Emperor Corinno, he now finds himself isolated.
Dune: Prophecy Delivers the Shocking Deaths of Emperor Corrino and Sister Francesca
In a turn of events, Sister Francesca approaches Emperor Corrino later on, unveiling Valya Harkonenn’s strategy to him. She clarifies that she has no intention of harming him, but it seems it’s already too late. The words and actions of Valya, as well as Desmond Hart and Empress Natalya, have left a deep impact on the Emperor. Unfortunately, due to past events, he is no longer convinced by Francesca’s love for Javicco.
In a moment of pure agony and helplessness, the Emperor takes the Gom Jabbar and arranges for his own death. Francesca tries to help him, but Empress Natalya comes in and stabs her as well. And thus, both Emperor Corrino and Sister Francesca meet their deaths on Dune: Prophecy.
Tula Learns Desmond Hart’s Powers are Really a Machine-Based Disease Motivated By Fear
On Wallach IX, Tula delves further into what she now suspects is an airborne machine virus responsible for the fiery deaths in the series Dune: Prophecy. She uncovers that this virus isn’t organic or human, but rather made up of tiny mechanical components called nano-machines. These nano-machines are activated by fear and destroy their hosts when they succumb to it. It appears Desmond has the ability to transmit and activate the machine virus in others. As you may recall, “Fear is the mind-killer.” With this understanding, Tula plans to travel to Salusa Secundus with the aim of saving or treating her son, Desmond Hart.
Sister Dorotea Returns Through Lila and Leads a Sisterhood Mutiny Against Valya Harkonnen in Dune: Prophecy‘s Finale Ending
Without Tula and Valya Harkonenn absent, there’s an opportunity for a rebellion within the Sisterhood. Sister Lila’s ancestral spirits have been recurring within her since undergoing The Agony ritual. Notably, Sister Dorotea has surfaced with the intent to avenge Valya’s death and restore the Sisterhood to what she perceives as its original purpose.
Sister Dorotea uncovers and shares with the other sisters that Valya had killed numerous sisters who preceded them, aiming to seize power within the Sisterhood. Understandably, they express shock and dismay at this revelation.
Valya Is Able to Overcome Desmond Hart’s Powers and the Machine Disease with the Help of Tula
Tula arrives at Salusa Secundus in the nick of time to aid Valya as Desmond Hart unleashes a virus onto her computer system. The key, however, is to conquer fear instead of surrendering to it. While ensnared by her recollections and apprehensions, Valya simultaneously discovers Desmond Hart’s past, including how he acquired his powers and the machine virus itself.
In the final episode of “Dune: Prophecy,” Valya contemplates killing Desmond since he sets off a virus, but Tula prevents her by speaking up. Eventually, Valya decides to let Tula deal with Desmond Hart however she chooses and departs. Later on, Desmond commands Tula’s arrest.
The Finale of Dune: Prophecy Reveals What Happened to Desmond Hart and Presents Us with a Shadowy New Enemy (And What Were Those Nefarious Prophecy Lights?)
So, you might be wondering about how Desmond Hart acquired his powers. It’s revealed that he was abducted by a secretive foe utilizing intelligent machines. The ominous Dune: Prophecy space lights that appear in everyone’s apocalyptic visions are, in fact, the glows of a machine that Desmond witnessed while lying on an operating table. This machine virus infected Desmond’s eye, bestowing upon him the ability to infect others with it. As of now, we’re still unaware of who orchestrated this event against Desmond.
Dune: Prophecy‘s Final Episode Finally Takes Us to Arrakis
Towards the climax of “Dune: Prophecy,” our characters – Valya Harkonnen, Princess Ynez, and Kieran Atreides – arrive at a crucial destination, the desert planet Arrakis itself. Their objective becomes clear as they seek to understand the fate of Desmond Hart and identify their true adversary.
