In the series “Dune: Prophecy,” the enigmatic character Desmond Hart, portrayed by Travis Fimmel, left viewers guessing about his true nature. Throughout the show’s run, fans speculated about Desmond’s real identity, a question that was eventually answered in the final episodes – Desmond Hart was none other than the son of Tula Harkonnen and Orry Atreides, making him part of a powerful lineage connected to Paul Atreides. However, it is revealed that “Dune: Prophecy” gave viewers clues about Desmond’s true identity as early as episode one, and these hints were hidden in Desmond’s costumes. Remarkably, most viewers failed to notice the subtle details. Here’s what costume designer Bojana Nikitović shared with us regarding the way “Dune: Prophecy” subtly unveiled Desmond Hart’s true identity through his attire.
Nikitović confirms, “Indeed!” When inquired if she hinted at Desmond Hart’s identity through his costume details. “There was a subtle element that I’m unsure if the audience noticed, but Desmond often has, even from the start, a black fabric piece as part of his Dune: Prophecy costumes. This black fabric is an embossed fabric from his mother’s Sisterhood costume. In fact, when he was born, his mother Tula, wrapped him in this costume and gave him away, so it’s the only thing he has from her. This one piece was significant to Desmond, portrayed by Travis Fimmel, as it connected him with his mother and her family.
Alison Schapker, the showrunner of Dune: Prophecy, shares a similar thought about revealing Desmond Hart’s identity subtly from the beginning. She points out, “Some might not catch it at first, but the fabric he carries during our initial encounter with Desmond Hart – as he approaches the palace – holds significance. This black cloth serves as a symbol of his mother throughout the series. He uses it in personal instances as a way to preserve his determination and ties to her until their eventual meeting. In that pivotal moment, he’s gripping her actual dress, realizing that what was once a piece of his baby blanket, swaddled in Sisterhood cloth, has been with him all along. This symbolic item that he clung to is now in the hands of his mother. We subtly inserted these details to gradually hint at the direction the story would take.
Wearing a Sisterhood cloak meticulously designed by Bojana Nikitović in the Dune series, adorned with an intricate embossing technique, is a clever detail. Nikitović explains, “We developed a new method… The embossing we used on the Sisterhood costumes, specifically on the collar and upper sleeves, also has a printing effect that makes the fabric react in a specific way.” For astute viewers of Dune, it was clear that the fragment of fabric Desmond carried had a special significance or origin. This subtle Easter egg suggests that the creators of Dune wanted to acknowledge and reward their audience for paying close attention and piecing together the mysteries-a mark of a well-crafted show indeed.
Therefore, it’s not unexpected that Dune: Prophecy has been nominated for four Emmys this year, among them the category of Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes for Nikitović’s design. Any series that cleverly employs its costumes to shape its storyline is our pick for the win.
