As a longtime fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune series, I must admit that the latest episode of “Dune: Prophecy” left me both intrigued and slightly bewildered. The Sisterhood’s prophetic nightmares, Tula’s haunting dreams, and the revelation of Sister Theodosia’s shapeshifting powers have certainly added a new layer to this already complex narrative.
Breaking Down “Dune: Prophecy” Episode Four – “Twice Born
Dune: Prophecy Episode 4 Delivers Some Major Political Machinations as Many Players Collide
Following a sequence of memories that filled us in on the backstory of the Harkonnen sisters, we find ourselves back in the current timeline of “Dune: Prophecy” during episode four, titled “Twice Born.
Valya Harkonnen
As a cunning gamer, I’ve found myself in a familiar scenario, where Valya Harkonnen has been kicked out of the Emperor’s court, all thanks to Desmond Hart. But let me tell you, underestimating Valya is never a wise move. Despite being toppled, she’s far from defeated. With the Sisterhood by her side, she’s hatching a new plan. Her target? The Emperor Corrino, during his next appearance at the Landsraad, the high council of the Imperium.
In the fourth episode of “Dune: Prophecy”, Valya Harkonnen skillfully exploits the greedy tendencies of her peers to regain entry into the Landsraad following her disgrace. By cleverly persuading other houses that they should investigate House Corrino to test the Emperor’s power after Pruewt Richese’s death, she manages to manipulate them into inviting House Harkonnen to the council. This could potentially incur the Emperor’s anger, but Valya and her allies succeed in tricking the other houses.
Princess Ynez and the Rebellion
Meanwhile, Princess Ynez firmly holds the conviction that her father erred gravely by trusting Desmond Hart with his secrets. The following day, she resolves to voice her opposition towards him at the Council of Planets, commonly known as the Landsraad. Earlier in the night, she finds solace in Keiran Atreides, unaware that a group is plotting to detonate a bomb during the Landsraad meeting. This act is intended to spark widespread revolution and ultimately restore the Imperium to the control of its people.
It’s worth mentioning: In the fourth episode of “Dune: Prophecy,” it appears that Kieran Atreides is the son who survived the massacre by Tula, which we saw in episode three.
Desmond Hart, Emporer Corinno, and Empress Natalya Corinno
Despite Emperor Corinno’s preference for caution with his newfound authority, Empress Natalya Corinno, through Desmond Hart’s actions, appears to have different intentions. She spread word of Hart’s alleged murder of Pruewt Richese as a warning to others who might challenge the status quo or utilize thinking machines. In the fourth episode of “Dune: Prophecy,” titled “Twice Born,” Empress Natalya Corinno seems poised for her husband to take full control.
What Happened at the Landsraad During Dune: Prophecy Episode 4?
At the Landsraad assembly, all influential figures assembled together. However, contrary to expectations, things didn’t go as planned. Ultimately, Desmond Hart became aware of the rebels’ scheme to detonate a bomb within the Landsraad, and it was he who appeared to thwart their attempt. Sadly, Valya Harkonnen never had the opportunity to stop an explosion from occurring, effectively ending her objective to protect the emperor. Additionally, Desmond Hart exploited the situation to instill fear among the Great Houses, accusing them of misuse of thinking machines. In reality, he seems to be punishing the nobles for this offense as a means to fortify the Emperor’s absolute authority.
In the fourth episode of “Dune: Prophecy,” Valya doesn’t seem to gain much from her involvement, yet she manages to acquire a sample of Desmond Hart’s blood. Her plan is to analyze this sample in order to uncover his genetic background and reveal his true identity.
In “Twice Born,” Harrow Harkonnen implicated House Corinno for the murder of Pruewt Richese, with Princess Ynez seemingly supporting his claim. It was Ynez’s intervention that halted Kieran Atreides from detonating the palace bomb. Desmond Hart did not harm any of these characters, so their fates remain unknown and will be revealed in future events.
Dune: Prophecy Turns Horror Series as Prophetic Nightmares Engulf The Sisterhood
At the Sisterhood, the acolytes are plagued by disturbing, shared dreams that grow more intense. As Tula guides them through these nightmares for insight, the sisters become disconcertingly affected by their dream state. In these visions, reminiscent of the prophecies in Dune: Prophecy, sand and sandworms (Shai-Hulud) hold a mysterious place, as do the enigmatic lights from unknown spacecrafts that loom at the edge of each vision of destruction. The dreams seem to be imbued with an elemental intensity; they inflict pain on the sisters and stir one towards self-destruction.
Later on, Tula experiences a visionary nightmare too; within this dream, she foresees her hidden truths being revealed – such as Dorotea’s demise and the destruction of the Atreides family. Upon waking, however, there is something less ominous: Lila has regained consciousness due to Spice’s healing powers. Yet, one cannot help but wonder if Sister Lila remains unchanged from before, or if Tula is indeed central to the challenges they all confront. The answers to these questions will only be revealed in future episodes of Dune: Prophecy.
