DUNE: PROPHECY Episode 3 Recap: Flashbacks, Fueds, and Sisterhood Above All

As a long-time follower of the Dune saga, I must say that this week’s episode, “Sisterhood Above All,” was nothing short of thrilling! The interplay between Valya and Tula, two sisters bound by blood but divided by ideology, was particularly captivating.

Recapping the Third Episode of ‘Dune: Prophecy’ – ‘Sisterhood Above All’

Dune: Prophecy Episode Three Flashes Back to a Deepening of the Harkonnen vs. Atreides Feud

In the third episode of “Dune: Prophecy”, we revisit young Valya and Tula in flashbacks. The story unfolds prior to when Valya left for the Sisterhood. It’s revealed that they had a brother named Griffin, who was on a mission to restore dignity to their family lineage and reverse their fortunes. However, Valya persuades him to aim higher; she suggests he should seek out Vorian Atreides, the one who initially labeled the Harkonnens as traitors and cowards, and encourages him to retract what she believes are false accusations.

Because Griffin strongly supports Valya, he carries out his assigned tasks. However, it appears that Vorian Atreides ends up taking Griffin’s life due to these actions. This incident strengthens Valya’s determination to retaliate against the Atreides family. First, they tarnished Valya’s entire House, and now they have made it personal by killing Griffin. For the moment, though, Valya is leaving to join the Sisterhood.

The First Use Ever of Dune‘s The Voice Happens on Dune: Prophecy

In this third episode of “Dune: Prophecy,” a flashback scene reveals the initial invocation of “Dune’s” powerful ability, “The Voice.” As far as we are aware, this is the first occurrence. Prior to his demise, Griffin and Valya discuss an incident where he plunged into icy waters. To rescue him, Valya commanded him to swim towards her. Overwhelmed by the threat to her brother’s life, “The Voice” was activated within Valya, demonstrating a true act of Sisterhood as portrayed in “Sisterhood Above All.” This lifesaving action by Valya is the earliest known manifestation of “The Voice” in both “Dune” and “Dune: Prophecy.

Valya Meets Mother Raquella and Makes a Choice Between the Sisterhood and Her Great House

Following Griffin’s demise, Valya makes her way towards the Sisterhood. Yet, she finds it hard to move past the tragic fate that befell House Harkonnen at the hands of House Atreides. Consequently, she struggles to prioritize “Sisterhood Above All.” However, she manages to win the confidence of the Sisterhood’s leader, Mother Superior Raquella, who instructs her with a view to becoming her successor. During this episode of Dune: Prophecy, Mother Superior Raquella discloses the genetic archive to Valya and explains that it serves to identify ideal pairings, strengthen marriages, and discover leaders less likely to succumb to corruption and tyranny, thus averting humanity’s potential extinction. This concept resonates with Valya, who enjoys manipulating and controlling situations. It is also suggested that she masterfully develops “The Voice” and imparts it to the sisters who are loyal to her. Notably, this technology used in the genetic archive is considered taboo. Furthermore, Valya is depicted as honing her skills in perfecting “The Voice,” which she subsequently teaches to the supporting sisters within the Sisterhood.

Nevertheless, a schism has emerged within the Sisterhood, with Valya and her adherents on one side, and Dorotea and her followers on the other. This division has caused tension throughout the organization. Mother Superior Raquella instructs both parties to collaborate and undergo “The Agony” from Dune, a process that will enable them to access their genetic memories and ascend to the rank of reverend mothers. It appears Raquella is banking on this enhanced knowledge helping them decide the best course of action.

At the very end, Valya decides against participating in the ritual. There are still matters she needs to resolve concerning her House and kin.

Tula’s Journey of Harkonnen Revenge in Dune: Prophecy Episode 3

In another episode of Dune: Prophecy, we find ourselves revisiting Tula Harknonnen’s past. Unlike Valya, Tula appears less inclined towards revenge at first. However, this façade quickly crumbles. In a flashback scene, Tula is seen entering into a relationship with a man, disguising her true identity under an assumed name. This man, we later discover, is none other than an Atreides. The nature of their relationship leaves us questioning Tula’s intentions at first. However, as the episode progresses, all becomes clear.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but recount the chilling tale of how Tula skillfully ensnared Orry Atreides, winning his heart as part of her vengeful plot. During what seemed like a joyous family gathering, Tula secretly contaminated everything, ultimately poisoning not just Orry, but all present members of the Atreides clan. This horrific act, known as the Atreides massacre, was carried out in the name of House Harkonnen. Mercifully sparing one small child’s life, Tula demonstrated her cold-hearted allegiance to her own family.

Is the Atreides Child that Tula on Dune: Prophecy Lets Live Keiran Atreides?

In the third episode of Dune: Prophecy, there’s a question about the Atreides child that Tula allowed to live. Since only one Atreides is presently featured in the series, and that’s Keiran Atreides, it seems plausible that the child Tula spared could be from the family she had previously killed. Could we meet this child in future episodes of the series? It certainly appears so.

Tula Saves Valya’s Life After She Undergoes “The Agony” in “Sisterhood Above All”

After Tula’s Atreides massacre, Valya informs the Superior Mother of her intention to leave, to which the Superior Mother consents but advises that Valya must endure “The Agony” alone if she aspires to rejoin the Sisterhood in the future.

Following a heated argument with her family, Valya feels compelled to embrace the Sisterhood fully. She ingests “The Agony’s” potion, brushing with death, but Tula miraculously revives her, demonstrating yet another selfless act within their sisterhood on “Sisterhood Above All.

Valya in the Present Day of Dune: Prophecy Episode 3

In episode three of Dune: Prophecy, Valya’s presence in the present is minimal. However, her intentions are clear – she aims to preserve Sisterhood dominance among the Great Houses. She commands the Truthsayers to suppress any uncertainty and vows to regain control over the Emperor, Imperium, and House Corrino, despite being banished by Desmond Hart.

Valya discovers the fresh details in the prophecy, which Tula and Sister Lila extracted from Sister Lila’s genetic memory. Straightaway, Valya associates Desmond with these newly revealed aspects of the prophecy.

Towards the finale, she decides to pay a visit to Harrow Harkonnen, whom she addresses as Aunt Valya, though the motive behind this remains unclear at this point.

Is Sister Lila Dead on Dune: Prophecy? Episode 3’s Ending Explained

Thus, we reach the “explanation of the ending” for our Dune: Prophecy episode three recap titled “Sisterhood Above All.” Following The Agony, Sister Lila remains alive, though she’s more like in a deep unconscious state rather than deceased. It’s mentioned that no one has ever returned from this condition that Sister Lila now finds herself in, but Tula refuses to accept her death.

Against Valya’s desires, Tula feigns letting Lila perish but covertly hides her in the enigmatic chamber of the genetics vault. Employing clandestine technology, Tula endeavors to revive Lila by doing so. Tula commands the AI thinking apparatus to sustain Lila’s existence. She discloses that “Spice can renew vitality” and that Lila “might yet survive if you dispense the appropriate amount.

In the TV series “Dune: Prophecy”, Sister Lila is still alive for now. However, one can’t help but ponder about the potential price that Tula and the Sisterhood might have to pay due to her continued existence.
