Being a supporting character in Hawkins, the town where *Stranger Things* is set, is arguably worse than being the drummer in the fictional band Spinal Tap. While the main characters have repeatedly survived encounters with the terrifying Upside Down, many of their friends and enemies haven’t been so lucky – including Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn, who made a heroic sacrifice in season four. Fans hoped Eddie might return in the show’s final season, especially given some clues in the episode titles and hints from Quinn himself. However, the creators, the Duffer Brothers, have confirmed that Eddie Munson will not be appearing in *Stranger Things 5*.
Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of the show, recently discussed the upcoming final season with Empire magazine. They also addressed a popular fan theory, and Matt Duffer confirmed that Eddie Munson will not be returning. “I love that Joe Quinn is teasing fans! But he really is dead,” Matt explained.
So, I was reading an interview with Matt Duffer, one of the creators of *Stranger Things*, and he was talking about Will Byers. Apparently, Noah Schnapp has been super busy filming a ton of other projects – like five movies, can you believe it? Duffer basically said there’s just no time in his schedule to come back and film anything for *Stranger Things* right now. He was pretty blunt, actually – he jokingly said Will is ‘fully under that ground,’ meaning he doesn’t see a return happening anytime soon. It’s a bummer, but sounds like Noah’s career is taking off!
Okay. Harsh.
Okay, that statement feels really final, but honestly, I’m still not buying it. What more could they even say? It’s like, are they going to casually drop that they’ve got a massive surprise planned – one that could ruin the ending – and then announce, ‘Oh, and by the way, Joe Quinn is *definitely* returning as Eddie Munson in season five?’ I just don’t see it happening.
You’re right. He likely won’t come back, and the creators are probably being honest about that. However, we won’t know for certain until the show finishes on New Year’s Eve. Until then, we’ll still hope to see Eddie return—and it would be amazing if he brought some ghostly drummers with him, too!
