Duffer Brothers Say the Rock From STRANGER THINGS Is Key to Spinoff

The popular show Stranger Things has ended, but the story isn’t over completely. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, are developing a spin-off series. They’ve now shared how it will connect to the original show: the mysterious rock young Henry Creel had in a briefcase during the Stranger Things finale will be central to the new series.

In an interview with Variety’s Kate Aurthur, creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed that the final episode of Stranger Things contained a link to their upcoming spinoff series. When asked about the mysterious rock found in the cave, they remained tight-lipped, hinting that its significance will be explained in their next show. Matt Duffer suggested the rock played a key role in Henry’s transformation into a monster, and that transformation was, surprisingly, something Henry wanted.

The new series will explore and clarify some mysteries, helping viewers understand what’s been happening. However, it features a completely separate storyline and isn’t a detailed look at the Mind Flayer. It’s a fresh start, but it will tie up some remaining loose ends.

We’ve seen how damaging that rock was to Henry Creel, and it’s his most traumatic memory. The play Stranger Things: The First Shadow reveals the stone – a glowing red and black object filled with dark particles – originates from Dimension X. After the conclusion of Stranger Things 5, Volume 2, this dimension appeared to be the same one Dustin called the Abyss. While they seem identical, Shawn Levy, an executive producer and director, believes they are different, and the Duffer brothers haven’t even confirmed this with him.

Now we might know why they’re being coy about that question.

If Dimension X isn’t the Abyss, it completely changes our understanding of everything. It suggests the Mind Flayer – or something even more dangerous disguised as it – is still out there. This also explains how the rock that gave Henry Creel his powers could still have a history and meaning, even though Stranger Things seemed to have finished its story with that connection.

The group finally defeated the threats in the Upside Down, but that doesn’t mean everything is safe. Evil still exists, and it looks like it’s about to cause trouble in the real world, as teased in the new show from the creators of the original series.
