I’m so excited to hear that the world of Stranger Things isn’t over! Matt and Ross Duffer – the creators, or the Duffer Brothers as everyone knows them – have officially confirmed a spin-off series is happening at Netflix. They actually told Deadline they’ve been thinking about this project since Season 4 came out back in 2022, which is amazing to me!
Matt explained that they had successfully kept a secret from Netflix for a while. “They were really frustrated because we wouldn’t tell them what it was,” he said. Apparently, Finn Wolfhard was the only one who figured it out.
Ross mentioned that Finn Wolfhard’s initial idea for a spin-off might not be what he currently believes. “Honestly, I think he might have forgotten what he originally suggested,” Ross said. “I told him it wasn’t right when he brought it up before. Or maybe he was just teasing us—I’m not sure.”
I recently read an interview with Finn Wolfhard where he talked about the Stranger Things spinoff, and it sounds really interesting. He compared it to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks – think a similar vibe, but with an anthology format. Basically, it’ll be set in the same world as Stranger Things and still connected to the Upside Down. He also hinted that the story might take place in Russia, possibly involving a lab, and that we’ll be following a whole new group of characters instead of the ones we know from Hawkins.
Matt addressed the rumors, explaining that the initial reaction to the spinoff reveal was overblown because the person who revealed it seemed to have forgotten they did! He needs to discuss it with them, but now everyone at Netflix is aware and enthusiastic. He’s also thrilled with the team they’ve put together, though he can’t share details just yet. They’re working to move forward quickly, and he hopes to share more information soon.
The creators, the Duffer Brothers, explained that the new show will feature completely new characters and won’t interfere with the established story of Stranger Things. Matt Duffer shared that the idea came from genuine enthusiasm, stating, “It’s something Ross and I are really excited about, and it’s quite different. The important thing is that it’s driven by passion, not just something we were told to do.”
They’re committed to keeping the quality high for anything related to Stranger Things. They want each new release to feel special and be something fans will enjoy. Even though they’re now working at Paramount, the creators, Ross and I, will still be very involved in the franchise, and we’re currently developing ideas for a spin-off series.
