Drew Barrymore Opens Up About Divorce From Will Kopelman and Parenthood: ‘My Dream Family Was Falling Apart’

Actress Drew Barrymore shares insights about her divorce from Will Kopelman in 2016. She explains that this period was significant as it allowed her to construct a new life for the sake of their two daughters, Olive (currently 12) and Frankie (10).

In an interview with AARP The Magazine (February/March 2025 issue), the actress who starred in Charlie’s Angels opened up about the emotional turmoil following her divorce after four years of marriage. At 49, she admitted to feeling adrift and overwhelmed by sadness during this challenging period. However, her unwavering dedication to improving as a parent gave her the resilience needed to step forward.

She shared, “My ideal family was crumbling, and I felt utterly lost about how to move forward. I’d grown up quickly, but suddenly I was unsure of what age I should identify with – all I knew was that my life had become burdened with weight, pain, and sadness, and for a time, I remained seated in this state.

After some time, fortunately, I managed to pull myself out of that situation,” Barrymore stated, further explaining, “I had two children who needed me, so I had to find a way to move forward.

Over time, Barrymore and Kopelman managed to build a strong co-parenting partnership. When Kopelman wed Alexandra Michler in 2021, Barrymore was grateful for the harmonious family environment they fostered. She praised Michler as an incredible addition to their lives, noting that this collaborative spirit has served as an inspiration for the growth and resilience of their daughters.

Even though her daughters have urged her to start dating, Barrymore has been careful in navigating this new phase of life, drawing on lessons learned from her childhood as a young actress in Hollywood. She explained, “My daughters suggest I go on dates, but I recall the discomfort I felt when men were present during my childhood – it didn’t feel safe to me. So, I might be overly cautious due to those past experiences.

Instead, Barrymore has chosen to prioritize her role as a mother and self-care over pursuing a romantic relationship.

After Drew Barrymore became a mother, she chose to devote less of her time to acting because she recognized that her constant engagement in lengthy filming sessions would leave no room for her children. Instead, her main priorities are to invest quality time with them and establish a secure and nurturing environment.
