Robert Downey Jr. just dropped a behind-the-scenes image from the set of Avengers: Doomsday.
The image displays Robert Downey Jr. flipping through Jeremy Renner’s memoir while donning a muscle suit, suggesting he might be playfully hinting at his role as Doctor Doom. He captioned the post with compliments for Renner’s book, describing it as “enlightening” and “a must-have read.

It’s noteworthy that Jeremy Renner isn’t included among the 27 actors who were just revealed to be reprising their roles in the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday.

Robert Downey Jr. playing more than once character in Doomsday?
However, maybe Robert Downey Jr. is teasing a different Marvel character?
As a follower of comic book news, I’ve picked up a hint or two about the upcoming Marvel blockbuster, “Avengers: Doomsday,” from none other than Chris Claremont, the renowned writer of the X-Men series. During his panel at the Huntsville Pop Culture Expo 2025, he dropped a bombshell – the movie will reportedly feature no less than 50 superheroes and 4 supervillains! While it’s not an X-Men film per se, it seems to be close. Claremont also shared that Robert Downey Jr., our beloved Iron Man, will be playing more than one role. He’ll portray an evil character, a twist on Iron Man, and then he’ll take on two other roles as well. Quite the mystery, isn’t it?
Claremont’s remark fuels curiosity about whether Downey might assume multiple roles in the movie, potentially portraying an alternate version of Iron Man, Doctor Doom, and another character altogether.
The writer also dropped additional bombs about Chris Evans, Scarlet Witch, the X-Men, and more.

The movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026. Following that, on May 7, 2027, you’ll find “Avengers: Secret Wars” in cinemas. At present, the Russo brothers are at the helm of directing, with filming taking place in the United Kingdom.
