As a lifestyle expert with years of experience in the entertainment industry, I must say that Doug Liman’s latest collaboration with Matt Damon for The Instigators is a testament to the power of long-lasting friendships and the magic they can weave on screen. Having had the opportunity to observe such camaraderie between Damon and Affleck firsthand, I can confidently say that their chemistry is not something that can be easily replicated—it’s like a well-aged wine that only improves with time.
In a recent update, director Doug Liman discussed the experience of teaming up with Matt Damon once more for their new heist comedy, The Instigators. This collaboration comes after their previous project together on the 2002 film The Bourne Identity. In this new movie, Matt Damon plays Rory, while Casey Affleck takes on the character of Cobby.
In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, director Doug Liman shared that Matt Damon considers him more like family or a brother. Interestingly, Liman mentioned that he wasn’t acquainted with Casey and Ben Affleck, who are close friends of Damon. When Liman joined The Instigators (presumably a group including the Afflecks and Damon), it felt like encountering his in-laws for the first time, an unusual yet wonderful experience.
The director went on to explain that everyone working on the project played a part in shaping the story, with each person pushing one another to produce the finest film possible. Liman recounted an instance where they all took turns refining the script, highlighting how it was frequently passed among the cast members. In particular, there was a scene featuring Affleck delivering a lengthy monologue, which Damon shortened, and then Casey elongated.
In the process of directing Road House, the director acknowledged he found himself entangled in certain “household matters” unrelated to the film. Given his long-standing relationship with the actor from The Last Duel, he decided to reach out to Matt first and requested, “Matt, please stop altering that scene any further.”
He mentioned that their actions were influenced by their past experiences together, and instructed the actor portraying Oppenheimer to give his co-star free rein. Director Doug Liman humorously commented that he found himself in a role like a marriage counselor for them, likening it to encountering close family friends for the first time – you can sense their strong, long-standing bond.
The director hinted that the movie will feature some fantastic scenes involving Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, as their on-screen connection is something truly special. He emphasized that this chemistry isn’t just for show; these two actors genuinely care for each other off-screen as well.
Currently, I’m excited to share that I’ve been streaming Doug Liman’s latest production, The Instigators, exclusively on Apple TV+. This gripping tale revolves around Rory (Damon) and Cobby (Affleck), an unlikely duo consisting of a father and an ex-con, who conspire to execute a daring robbery against a corrupt politician.
