Donnie Yen could soon trade his white cane for a director’s seat, even as he continues his portrayal of Caine, the blind assassin, in an upcoming spinoff of the John Wick series. After receiving high praise for his performance in John Wick: Chapter 4, Yen is reportedly discussing the possibility of not only acting but also directing this forthcoming project.
In a conversation with ComingSoon.net, Yen expressed, “We are currently in the process of creating something,” further mentioning that he has been having talks with Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick films. Yen also revealed, “They’re interested and so am I.
In an exclusive chat with Collider, Yen admitted that he’s pondering over the possibility of becoming the director. He confirmed, “Yes, it’s accurate.” He added, “Both the studio and I share this desire.” Yet, he remained guarded, suggesting ongoing talks and creative brainstorming sessions. “I have a few concepts in mind, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Yen showed eagerness yet acknowledged the weight of assuming such a major position. He clarified that he bears this responsibility, emphasizing his desire not to disappoint those watching him.
As a devoted fan, I must say that while Yen has made a name for himself as an exceptional actor, he’s also demonstrated his directorial prowess by helming projects like “Legend of the Wolf” and “Shanghai Affairs”. His latest work, “The Prosecutor”, showcased his directing talent beautifully. Yen can’t help but hope that David Leitch (Stahelski) will remain part of this spinoff, jokingly adding, ‘I sure hope he sticks around!’, underscoring his intention to keep the project entertaining and captivating for viewers like me.
In May 2024, a new installment in the “John Wick” world, titled the “Caine Spinoff,” was initially announced. Yen’s potential involvement as director for this spinoff signals an intriguing next step for the franchise, offering both thrilling action sequences and deeper narratives as the story progresses.
