As a dedicated follower of political drama and late-night television, I find myself entrenched in the latest spat between Donald Trump and Stephen Colbert. Having witnessed numerous episodes of both men’s performances, I must admit that my personal preference leans towards the wit and satire of Stephen Colbert.
In more common terms, Donald Trump recently criticized Stephen Colbert, a well-known talk show host, on social media. He described Colbert as “extremely dull” and suggested that CBS should dismiss him. The former U.S. President has been having disagreements with late-night TV hosts lately, and Colbert became the target of his criticism following an interview on PBS.
On September 24th, he shared his opinions on Truth Social following his viewing of Colbert’s PBS interview during which the comedian labeled Trump as dull. In response, Trump chose to criticize Colbert by branding him as unfunny, overpaid, overrated, and incredibly boring. He posed a rhetorical question regarding why public funds should be allocated towards such an “utter and complete failure,” in reference to the talk show host.
Trump expressed his viewpoint by saying, “Why squander resources on this absolute flop? He isn’t amusing – quite the contrary, he’s overpaid for his lack of humor. Furthermore, he’s not insightful and he’s incredibly dull. His show is struggling with a severe decline in viewers.” Trump also suggested that Greg Gutfeld’s show is outperforming Colbert’s talk show in ratings.
Trump took things a step further by urging CBS to dismiss Colbert, stating that essentially anyone could perform his role, implying the network’s costs would be reduced. In a letter, he wrote, “CBS should end their contract with him and select someone else at random from the street who might do better, and for significantly less money.” He even hinted that he knew someone more intelligent and skilled than Colbert, or perhaps someone willing to work without pay.
To elaborate further, his diatribe didn’t stop at that point; instead, he drew other late-night television hosts into the fray. I found myself listening to him as he criticized Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers of NBC, as well as Jimmy Kimmel from ABC. Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with these entertainers, labeling them equally poor or even worse than Colbert, whom he referred to as “the two duds” on NBC and ABC.
In a PBS interview, Stephen Colbert was questioned about whether Donald Trump would be given another opportunity to guest on his CBS show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Colbert stated that he wouldn’t, explaining that Trump seemed rather dull or unexciting. He also expressed his discomfort with inviting individuals who seem to present misleading ideas or appear dishonest.
